Today I got a email from W400 user(not BCF) in Singapore.
In summary, he said he want to buy W650 engine from japan and attach it to his W400. He says W650 isn't sold there.
I thought 1hour and responded,
1. Buying new engine is impossible(cause maker don't stock it like parts)
2. It's hard to find used engine cheaply.
3. Used W650 is not so cheap also here.
4. I don't think there is any shop which remove engine/carb/exhaust etc from W650, pack them and export from Japan to Singapore.
5. W400 is designed as 400cc many other different points like gear ratio/suspension length/jets...
6. Total cost can be huge enough to buy a brandnew big bike
7. W400 resale value will severely down.
In summary, I don't suggest it. I responded.

I still wonder if I was correct. What is you thoughts?
Jap fellows in anonym board weren't helpful as usual.

I think you were right.. parts would be hard for him to get, some of the electrics would most likely need replacing also (cdi unit e.t.c. not cheap) and thats assuming it fits in the frame, even if it does brackets could be different (unless its like the zzr 400/600 where the smaller just has larger sleeves and smaller pistons)

Not to mention the insurance and registartion laws (i know the chinese luuuuve their red tape and bureaucracy)

In short if you want a 400/500/600 then go buy one.. (example i can fit a 650cc engine in mine, far superior, but there rare, insureance would be crazy and i'd need to replace exhaust, carbs, airbox, TDI units, and thats an "easy" swap)

Probably the easiest thing to do assuming they use the same engine would be to get a set of 650 pistons and have the cylinder bored out or re-linered to take them. Basically do a big bore.

They wouldn't get much if anymore top end power but they would get a huge bottom and mid range.

Thank you for your replys. I've got response that he would rethink.
I'm relieved to hear that.

Buying bikes in Singapore seems to be very expensive.
He says he paid JPY1060,000 for his W400 Shocked

Quote:
W650 is not popular in Singapore and this model is not listed in the Land Transport Authority of Singapore and they have to send 1 unit to the Land Transport Authority of Singapore for inspection and testing. The bike shops or the Singapore Kawasaki distributor will only import the W650 if they have at least minimum of 10 confirmed orders.

That was the reason he can't buy W650.
It was also illegal to change an engine there. Rolling Eyes

I could learn some biking scene in Singapore instead.

W400 is shortened in stroke from W650. Very strange bike which was made only to sell for 400cc licence holder.

So the block is actually different? are you sure it's not like a 383 chevy motor with a 350 block and a 400 crankshaft?

W650 : 72.0*83.0 (Long stroke)
W400 : 72.0*49.0 (Short stroke)

I thought it interesting and checked main different parts between them.
Head (320£),pistons(34£),exhaust(362£),AirCleaner(71£),CrankShaft&Rod(331£),Transmission(428£),CrankCase(376£),Carbulator(438£),Rear Suspension&Frontfork(444£),SideStand(19£)
Total : 2823£
Same as new W650 in Japan Shocked .
