Got cold this mornig, due to only having leathers, and forgetting to take my office clothes in with me, so I had to go home and get them then ride back to work, meaning instead of spending 20 mins on the bike freezing I spent an hour.

My hands and thighs are still cold. Even though I have some fairly chunky alpinestars winter gloves my hands got cold. When I arrived back home I put some merino wool glove liners on underneath, and somehow found this to be even colder Question

I can't afford a nice set of warm textiles right now, would it be worth putting my waterproof trous on over them to stop the wind at least?

What would be great would be a one-piece windproof / waterpoof / slightly insulated oversuit to go over the top of the leathers to protect me from the weather, or hurry up, do my DAS and get something faired!

How do you cope with the cold when all you've got are leathers, and the bank balance is empty?

Get some of those rechargeable Gel pad things from Blacks or boots. I've got three which I used last year for long trips. You click the tab inside and it sets the gel solid and warm. Good for about 30 mins of heat. just chuck a few into a pocket and instant heat Smile. also, you can hove them into an inner pocket in your jacket and activate them prior to setting off if you know it'll be cold...

For real budget warmth, use newspaper down the front of your jacket and on your thighs, and a pair of tights under your trousers (can keep the newspaper in place that way). Cut down some plastic milk cartons and cable tie them on as hand protectors, which can keep the wind off. Layers are the key to warmth, so go with the waterproofs too, although you also want your body to breathe, otherwise you'll end up sweating like a pig.

I just bought these and these so stuff doesn't have to be expensive.

There are these as well, cheaper but second hand.

For the top half we have this, not very stylish but warm.

My last Bering trousers lasted 6 years and my coat is on its eight winter.

You could easily be kitted out for less than £100 if you look.

Just because other people spend a fortune doesn't mean you have to.

Try a hi-viz jacket over your usual kit, works great to keep the cold and wet out and there's no way they can utter those immortal words ''sorry mate I didn't see you''

Cost £12.99 from costco.

For the bottom end try some cycling leggings from Aldi £7 ish

On my 2 hour commute today the only cold part was my feet!

Can anyone suggest a remedy?

This morning was better, even if it was colder. Put my cycling waterproofs on over the leathers, kept most of the wind out, only my hands got really cold. Not sure why as I have some big chunky alpinestars gauntlets, but I've always had trouble keeping my hands warm even on the bicycle.

It was still chilly, but I wasn't shiverring and tansed up gripping the tank with my knees aftet 5 mins like yesterday.Thumbs Up

What am i going to to when the real winter starts? Get back on the pushbike Embarassed - I already have the winter kit for that. Remember last winter the water in my water bottle would freeze by the time I got to work, but I'd be toasty warm. Guess pedaling generates its own heat, and you're only going like 25 - 30mph tops instead of being blasted at 50 - 60mph all the way to work. That and the lights on my cycle are almost protable daylight standard, while the ones on my motorbike are like a birthday cake candle.

Heated grips and handlebar muffs.

Trouble with inner gloves is they can make the gloves tighter. This restrict the blood flow so you feel colder.

For winter I swear by the Hein Gericke 2 finger Pathan gloves, although other makes in the same style are available. Were about £35 last time I looked but they're one of the best bike related things I own.

If style is not your thing then as said, handbar muffs work. I've seen a picture of a courier who made his own with tape and jiffy bags. As for the rest, as said waterproofs will help keep off the windchill. Thermal tights are good (it's coming up to the ski season so some will be around). Even ladies tights/hold ups have been worn Confused

Best to go for layers, as each layer traps warm air. So t-shirt/thermal top, shirt, wool jumper, leathers and waterproof. Wear scarf/balaclave and make sure neck covered. If really cold then put newspaper in between your jacket and chest. One of the best posts about layers I've read is from this thread by stinkwheel. Worth a read (pic from thread).

Problem with heated grips is they can keep your palm warm but the thumb and back of the hand an get cold. I'd only use them with deflectors fitted as well.

A pair of Goretex socks springs to mind. Wear over normal socks. Acts as windproofing (plus waterproof) and keeps feet warm. There are some other makes available offering the same features without paying for the Goretex brand name. That is unless you wanted to invest in some Giali type heated clothing including socks and gloves (not a cheap option).

When taking up Biking this year (May time) I tossed up whether to spend on Leathers or Textiles, ended up with textiles and literally poured pints of sweat out of each arm of the jacket over summer months.

Today out for a blast with mates, they're in leathers and freezing their nuts off, me looking like a black michelin man all toasty and roasty, save for tips of fingers which were a bit cold. I have leathers now as well, but it's nice to have a choice Smile

Ear plugs helped too - no chill in the ears with them in, and also wore 2 neck warmers, though by dinnertime it'd warmed up and I was glad to finish the ride to strip the sweaty layers off. (it's all in washing machine now).

Nice day to get out on bike, (as it has been all this week) but it gets bloody cold on the motorways... Brrrrrrrrrrr
