Can you be "temporary gay"?

Very interesting debate on R2 this afternoon, prompted I believe by a couple of politicians recently who have left their wives for another man (or in one case been caught with rent boys) and then subsequently gone back into the family unit saying it was just a temporary thing.

From my own circle of friends it would seem that some people know they are gay pretty much from the beginning and never want or need to be anything else. Some people flirt with the idea, either because it's "fashionable" or because they are curious, then go back to being straight afterwards. Some people seem to try the straight life for a while (sometimes a long time) then eventually "discover" themselves at a later date, often after a nasty experience with the opposite sex, and never look back.

The debate seemed to suggest that society wants to pigeonhole people as one or the other and that in fact many more people than we think are actually bisexual but this seems to be even more frowned upon than being gay! That argument made a lot of sense to me.

I think there's probably more bisexual or bi-curious tendencies than most people would want to admit to.

I think sexual orientation is a continuum from totally straight to totally homosexual. We all sit on the line some place and can move along the line depending on circumstances ( like you suggested with the bad experince thing). I think there are very few 100%, never had a tiniest inkling heterosexual or homosexual people.

I recall hearing a quote some years ago on, I believe, an Oprah show (what can I say, I was home a lot during the day > <) which was along the lines of 'Sexuality is a fluid thing'. Other than the initial giggle factor of the words sex and fluid in the same sentence I can see the argument for it. I too tend to favour the idea of a continuum along which people can move with a considerable degree of flexibility throughout their lives. The habit/desire to affix a definite label to someone however, is a powerful one that many (whether they define themselves as straight/gay/bi/whatever) sadly give in to.

I know some people that are BI just because its an in thing but also i know people who are so homophobic they have to be gay somewhere along the line.

One guy i know says hes a sexual being and is into allsorts!

Yes people can be temporarily curious and may try certain things. Doesn't make them beasts.

IMO i think people can in a sense be temp gay. "in a sense" i mean they are curious ,as others have said, and therefore toy with the idea of what its like. Then as this quote just perfectly explains (classic)
