How many of you will be buying and wearing a Poppy for the upcoming Remembrance Day?

If not why not?

And on a slightly off topic note : What would the outcome be if WW1 or WW2 happened now? How would the current generation of young men cope with what our ancestors went through? Would we have won the wars?

I will be, and I will be at church on Sunday morning with my Guide Unit.

I think it's important for them to understand and remember, it's easy for my our generation and those older because we had close family either fighting in or affected by the Second World War, but for them it doesn't have the same personal connection.

I've always bought a poppy (well, when I've been in the country), but I haven't always worn it.

If WW1 and WW2 happened now? I'd guess that a lot more people would die.

Would people cope? Yes, it's a process of thought. When the (political) environment changes your attitudes change also; but I'd also guess that there'd be many more 'conscientious objectors' than in the past with more support for them (no white feathers anymore).

Would we have won? The outcomes of most wars can be seen as a 'luck'; so many outside events (like the weather) shaped the outcome of past wars. Such variables are more controlled these days.

No.

I have done my Nov 11th stuff when I was in the ATC.

I collected money, wore them, I was even a sleeping soldier around the sentitaff and lead the parade.

I know the money is supposed to help with those whom fought in the war, but shoud nt we be moving on now, some people dont want to be reminded of the horrible things that happened to them or their loved ones. I think it is a little sad for all of the other service men and women that died in other conflicts that arent remembered (I know the 11th is for everyone, but its always aimed at WW1 WW2).

It was on the radio the other day that they are finding it harder to recruit 16 year olds in to the armed forces as they are too fat and are just not fit enough.

Fair enough they are away from their loved ones for 6 months at a time which having a family would be hard, but thats war I suppose.

The bit that annoyed me the most was the fact they the new recruits are being put off with having to go into hostile places like the Middle East Rolling Eyes FFS guys, you will be armed and expected to kill the enemy as part of your job, you cant turn round and say 'its a little too hot for me today, I'm off for a swim'.

If this country is relying on chavs with guns to save us then sign me up for a suicide cult now please.

I've had this discussion with my St John Ambulance division/leader. He has to attend as expected of officers and some of the more senior members think that everyone should attend.

I am more than happy to attend a remembrance 'service' at my local war memorial, and I will buy my poppy every year.

However, I strongly disagree that it should be held in a church with references to god all the time.

God didnt fight a war, men and women did and still do. Regardless of race or religion they give their lives for others.

I always put a £1+ in the poppy pot every year and wear mine.

Joe do you mean would we win WWII if we were still using 1940's technology or with today's technology?

I should probably phrase my question better - Do you think the youth of today would cope with fighting in a war as well as those in WW1 and WW2?

No way, the youth of today are so effing cocky they reckon they would be able to walk over the world and intimidate enemies like they intimidate old ladies outside shops.

Like one of my History lecturers said to me. England hasn't been invaded or beaten since 1066, so we see the world with rose tinted lenses and long live the British Empire. Still think many British people are very cocky. As much as I love my country and feel gifted to live here. I don't think we could win a war now.

However, I only say this with no knowledge of what 1930's teenage society was like, they could have been just as bad!

I also think due to the growing unpopularity of the monarchy many UK citizens aren't willing to die for Queen and Country. Although I would.

I wouldn't. I would fight for the freedom of those I know and love but the rest of the country and especially the Monarchy can get stuffed.

I think that very much depends on the church where the service is being held.

Logistically a Church is an ideal place to hold such a large service, it would be difficult to organise alternative venues, especially out in the sticks where the Church is the largest building around.

The service I attend in Brewood (where my Guides are based) has always been very interesting, informative, encompassing all wars and conflicts - especially those that are current and not at all relgious. Whilst there are hymns they are always well chosen and the prayers are not prayers to god, but reminders to us all to remember those who are at war and be thankful of how lucky we are to be safe.

I put a couple of quid in the pot when they were collecting at Somerfields the other day but my hands were a bit full so I didn't worry with the poppy.

One of the reasons I decided not to join the forces was that whilst I would happily defend myself and my family, I would not go to some place and fight just because my government says so.

the vast majority of people brought up in britain wouldn't have had any experience of the privations of war. Rationing of food, medical supplies and petrol would hit us far harder now than they ever would have in the earlier parts of the twentieth century because we're more dependant on imports now than ever and don't have sufficient resources in our own country to keep the population alive. I'm absolutely certain that a single year of blockades or sanctions would devastate the country.

I was at elvington air museum just outside york.....they have kept the WW" airbase as it was. One sign that hammered home the rationing was the notice on the toilet door stating 'only one sheet of toilet paper, per person, per day'!

If you get a chance to visit, do it. I spoke to one gentleman who'd flown 58 missions, thirty of which were on bombings runs into germany. He used to be a gunner, aka memphis belle style. Listening to his tales of bravery, endurance, stamina and resilience made me feel ashamed of how much we complain about so little.

Old men of his calibre really put life into perspective.

I have my poppy, and buy one every year... just think that it is important to remember what happened, even if it was a long time ago. Its important that the next generation learns that it was a terriable thing to happen and if poppy's help, then thats good.

I don't need a poppy to remember.

I also remember the fact that many lives were needlessly wasted as people in a safe place sent then to run into machine gun fire, or shot for cowardice if they didn't.

As do many charities. I do make some donations to charities and I choose these based on my own feelings regards to them, rather than current fashion.

I definitely do not make donations to charities because I am 'bullied' to or similar - sadly there are many, many worthwhile causes out there.
