Found out how good my brakes are (not good way of testing!)

Was driving about glasgow today(on me sv650s) the road was damp and traffic pretty heavy so i was taking my time. Was just driving past govan when all of a sudden for no reason the car in front of me emergency stops. I shit my self hammer on my front brakes, skidded the rear out to the left, nearly managed to save then the rear skids to the right. . Thankfully i caught it and held it up burt my knee, needed clean pants after that and all i can say is thank god i aint a bloke it would have hurt a lot more !

After i got my breath back i went after the guy and went mad at him, he did apologise but he thought he might be missing his turning off the road!!! Best of it is there was no turning where he hammered on the brakes, so he got called a few not so nice names and I drove off again, shaking with fear and anger , quick drink of coke and a fag and i was back to me old self.

Sounds like you had a lucky esacpe with that one.

Maybe you should have increased your gap between the car infront.
With winter around the corner the roads are a bit more damp and slippy this time of year.

To be fair, it's the person's behind responsibility to leave a safe distance to stop. (Though of course the driver should be checking behind before changing speed).

There could be other more serious reasons that someone has to suddenly stop - such as say someone falling in the road. Luckily a bike is, I'd say, a lot less likely to make the situation worse for other people apart from the biker, but in a car it could be that hitting the vehicle in front is the difference between life and death for the person in the road.

Glad you were ok - and note another lesson to be learnt - front brakes do the stopping! If you're stopping as hard as you can on the front, using the rear will usually just make you lose control!

I never touched the rear brake . There was atleast a 4sec gap between me and the car infront, i had to brake so hard as it was just over a blind bit of the road he stopped(where it raises and you cant see past it). Wasnt even speeding only doing 28/29mph in a 30 zone, should I have been going slower?

O.k this time rightly so he deserved a speaking to however what if it was some toddler that ran out in the road you would expect him to use every available means to stop before hitting the child,sorry mate i think you were to close as you say it was a blind bit of road its happened to all of us at some point

OK i possibley shouldnt have went mad at the guy as like you said there could have been a realy good reason (other than missing his turning) he braked like he did, just scared seven colour of poop out of me

You are very lucky you didn't go into the back of him. Hopefully it will make you more aware of the 2 second rule in future as it would have been completely your fault if you went up the back of him.

I know for a fact if you had come up to me and threatened me I would have told you where to go. Though not physically.

If the road is clean, wet tarmac, you can still stoppy a bike, that'd allow the rear to feel like it was sliding.

From four seconds back, why did you get so close you needed to e-stop at 30mph? A decent bike (SV650s fit this bill) will stop from 30 in well under 4 seconds.

Either sort out whatever's wrong with your brakes, or go find a quiet road to practise emergency stops on, 4 second gap at 30mph should be plently of room to stop without any trouble rather than the bike skidding side to side.
