I'm pretty sure your previous employer has to, by law, provide a reference. It will just show the dates of your employment, nothing about your performance.

My browser won't let me open the employment section (top left) on this, but I'd assume they'd have something about references in there, it being the Citizens Advice Bureau website.

To prove dates, you can also use your old payslips (if you've kept them), or any correspondence from the Taxman, e.g., your P45/P60.

Generally speaking, employers are not under a duty to provide a reference for a current or former employee, so if they don't want to provide a reference they usually won't have to.

Do what Itchy says and use your pay slips to prove your time there. Was there anyone you were friendly with whilst you worked there that would be happy to provide you with a personal reference? That would be the way forward. Failing that, is there anyone else you know (not family, but "professional" type people like Teachers, etc) that would write you a personal reference?
