Hi all, just looking for some tips, advice and help. If anyone is gunna be awkward and say oh its been posted before, please, i dont wanna hear that. I dont ahve much time to finalsie everyhting, so kinda rushing here lol.

Me and my friend rob, who also has a vfr, his is still in one piece though. Are going to france 9-16 December. Basically we just after some basic info.

What documents do i need to take out there with me? I heard rumours of v5, copies of insurance etc...
How old do you actaully have to be? I dont see anything for bikers having to be 18 unlike cars, but l plates are not allowed?
Any major other information i need to know?

Also, we need to compile a list of stuff we should take, as its our first time, we are a bit unsure and would like some help of seasoned pros. We though it best to catergorise, and so far we got the following headings:
Electrical, such as phone charger, batteries etc.
Bike tools, please suggest what i should be taking!!!
Clothing

And i need more headings as i am sure their are loads more, any ideas and help will be very very very appreciated.

Nathan.

All my continental trips have been by car or lorry so not much help there....but....make sure the bike is in tip top condition...serviced etc....tyres have you thought about ultraseal and it has to be ultraseal not any other goo.....you will need passport, insurance (bike, personal and breakdown) also log book and driving licence.....make photo copies of all documents that you take....a couple of straps to tie the bike down if you use the ferry.....on the channel tunnel the centre stand may do.....the E111 is now replaced by a credit card size European Health Insurance Card which is issued free but you have to send for it.....go to post office and enquire, if you think it wont be returned on time get two forms and take one with you....

Theres plenty of batteries there
you can pick up continental sockets at any terminal for your phone chargers
tools, wheel removal I would have thought
clothing, mid to northern france is just as cold and wet as here.
I have heard that you should wrap in waterproof material anything you put in your panniers
a gps is a good get you there, I have a garmin quest

give yourself plenty of time for the run to the port and allow for the trip across or under the channel....also somewhere to stay on tuther side
I used the formule1 very cheap clean not sure where the bikes would go tho.

How about some spare fuses as well? I know most bikes come with spares hidden away but its always nice to have extra.

Tool wise I would also take tools in which I can remove the rear wheel and a 10, 12 mm spanner to adjust the chain.

They are the E111 forms that you had to fill in from the post office....you have the E111 card so no worries there but dont forget it only covers basic medical stuff....how long is the return???not sure what you mean but the travel time is 35mins tunnel and 75mins ferry p&o.

To get your E111 card you had to fill the form in and wait as it came by post....what I suggest is go to the post office and see what they say....it may be that your friend could fill one form in to send and fill another one in to take with him....have a word with the post office people Im sure they will put you right.

For riding in France you need to take with you....

Arrow Driving licence
Arrow V5
Arrow insurance
Arrow set of spare bulbs

Don't need to take your MOT, but I take it just in case (it's only one more bit of paper)

an E111 card will be helpful, but bear in mind that in France the system is different from ours. Depends on the situation, you will have to pay for treatment/drugs, and then claim it back when you get back to the UK.

France takes credit cards and switch/maestro the same as we do, however, their automatic machines (pay-at-the-pump, or train tickets) usually do not. Make a point of going to the kiosk and deal with a person, and the cards work fine.

France shuts on Sunday.. it can be hard finding fuel if you're off the beaten track.

yup.

also, they are cracking down on UK speeders... if you're caught 'taking the piss' they will take your bike and licence off you there and then, and (if you're on the autoroute) drop you off at the next exit.

Instead of going to the post office you can apply for your E111 online here https://www.dh.gov.uk/PolicyAndGuidance/HealthAdviceForTravellers/AboutThisSection/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4135688&chk=VQx%2BrT

Where could i pick up a syphon , how much is reasonable?

Will take some eauros, apprently most of the major roads are tolls, are these likely to be expensive?

Dont think my vfr would cope with the sink Sad

toll roads aren't too expensive, but don't use your card in the automated payment tolls.. it assumes you're a car, and it costs a bit more Smile

not* even all autoroutes are tolls..

places like the roads leading to the peripherique around paris are so busy, that they aren't tolled, equally, where there's no alternative route (eg over large bridges) then these are often free as well.

Big road that goes to big city holds too many cars. Cannot stop every car and ask for money. Would take too much time.

Big road over water. Only route. Cannot ask money if they cannot go another way.

make sense now?

I'll try to break it down.

I said "only autoroutes are tolls", and that the french equivalent of our a/b roads are free. Never implied that all autoroutes are tolls, as they obviously aren't.

You then said "no even all autoroutes are tolls.. " and then went on to contradict yourself, hence the confusion.

HTH

There was a "t" missing...

It should have been "not all autoroutes"

All down to a typo Razz

I'd have thought that would have been obvious, otherwise it would have been grammatically wrong. "no even all autoroutes" doesn't make sense.
