I took my son to an irish pub this week. On the bike of course. I ordered a 500 g T bone steak. (R69). £5.

Instead of the usual options I ate it with HP sauce. It was really lekka! Any one know how to make it? i saw on the bottle it has dates, tamarind, vinegar, rye flour, spices etc. But a proper recipe?

I saw it was british as it had By her majesty's appointment blah blah and a brit addy, and even big ben on the front. But it said made in the netherlands. Why are the dutch making your sauces?

If it is imported from europe it will cost more than the steak, so I must figure out how to make it.

Or maybe buy 1 bottle and experiment?

Doubt you'll get the recipe as it's pretty secret!

Looking at Royal Fail prices it'd cost £14.61 to send you just 4 bottles of it. That's a pretty expensive sauce Very Happy

As I said, the steak costs more than the sauce. Then there are import duties payable this side. Im sure it is available here and I have seen it in luxury supermarkets.

What does it cost there? Im sure all the ingredients are available. Just how to work out a similar substitute Mr. Green

Dates and tamarind are not very british, or grown there Mr. Green

damn it was nice and is worth the effort to try and make something similar. Like Sanctions busting Mr. Green

It was made in Aston (Birmingham), until Heinz bought the company, and closed it after transferring production to the Netherlands (the tossers changed the recipe also)

Hmm, the bottle still listed the addy as in the UK. So another brit icon made elsewhere.

Is the version you get there also made in netherlands?

When I get back in a few weeks from my bike trip, Im going to buy a bottle of HP and start experimenting. Mix the key things and see what is missing, what is too much, too little etc.

I stopped buying it after Heinz switched production to Holland and changed the recipe. Ditto for Daddies. Sad Branston Brown sauce made in England (for now) took its place in the cupboard.

Actually i never ate cadburys milk chocolate anyway.

I dont blame you. The Kosher queen has taken it over. Irene Rosenfeld. Those vampires suck up everything.

I avoid putting money in their pockets where possible. So They have taken over HP as well Crying or Very sad

Ok, then it is Branston for me. I will keep my eyes open for it. But not from Pick N pay, part of the ackermann kosher empire.

Everything is about squeezing the last shekel, and who cares about locals losing their jobs.

Not a lot mate - about £1.80 for a 425g plastic bottle. I weighed the (just over) half bottle I've got downstairs earlier and it's 280g so in terms of actual weight with packaging it's nearer 500 I reckon.

I will check when Im back from my trip and restock on groceries. Our bottles are glass. I cant recall seeing it in plastic, but I never looked. The bottle I used was glass.

Even worchestershire sauce I buy in glass. I use it when making biltong Mr. Green

You can still get it in glass bottle form over here, only in smaller quantity - I think it's 225g.

L&P Worcester Sauce is only available in glass - s'best way innit.

Seems that the 2005 recipe change was to reduce salt but I remember it being more spicy too.
