Don't understand why people add the horrible hdr effect to pictures, looks terrible.

Because of underexposure/overexposure in certain areas.

I'm not a fan of HDR, but there are a few exceptions where it really works...in HDR's defense most when compared to the original look much better, This one works...I would have deleted the original the moment i saw it otherwise.
Granted the light doesn't look natural, there are highlights where there shouldn't be highlights, but overall i could live with this image.
what program was used to convert?

Just found in GIMP the Retinex filter helps get detail back from the shadows.
