G'day guys (+ dolls!)

Seriously please, how bad/good are Kymco's

I bought one from new as i thought it would be a cheap runabout and easy to park. It seems to be fine in the dry but lethal in the wet, by that i mean it is so slippery on the back tyre. Also i find that 2nd gear slips into neutral often making me look a right noob. Should i expect this from a new bike? Is it the way im riding it or is it because its a Kymco.

Any thoughts on this would be gratefully received.

The tyres that usually come on such low budget bikes are essentially plastic and an extremely hard compound. I would swap them ASAP and you'll probably enjoy it more.

Would I ever buy one? No, because I could get a second hand jap bike for the same price and then be able to sell it for that same price when I'm done. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, this poll isn't going to get your money back so just enjoy it for what it is. Thumbs Up

Keep up with the maintenance and it will cause you a hell of a lot less problems.

Kymcos are (or have traditionally been) among the better Chinese[*] made bikes. I've seen more older Kymcos still on the road than other marques.

However, the quality on each model is different, as is each shift at the sweatshop. With any bike built to down a budget - which is pretty much all 125s these day - quality control can be ropey and you won't get more than you pay for.

Cheer up, you could get less. Have you seen the threads on CBF and Duke 125s? Wink

[*] Yes, I know, "Taiwan". It's own official name is "Republic of China".

Cheap Chinese Tyres are super hard wearing but not so grippy, great if you want to rack up lots of sedate miles, shite if you want to go round a corner fast in the wet. If you want more grip get better tyres.

Elaborate on 2nd gear slipping in to neutral that could be a fault you want rectified while it's still under warranty (assuming you bought it new).

I used to have a bajaj pulsar - same bike, but India has weird corporation laws that mean an Indian company must be involved at some point. Dunno whether mine was Indian made or Chinese made, but it regret getting rid of it.

Mine was a 180, but made less power than a euro tuned 125.

As for your issues - yes tyres, but also you could compensate for them more. And the gear slipping out - it's not normal... Do you mean mid riding, or when you're upchanging? - Maybe you are a right noob Wink

As I have posted some time back, the kymco pulsar s did me no wrong, started first time, totally reliable and did over 100mpg, it happily redlined and did an easy 65mph in any condition.

Also only bike I have owned with a gear indicator, that is so useful, much missed.

So 👍 from me

Used one of those for my cbt, they had to take it away for another one because it was smoking more than a man on death row. The replacement had a overly high brake pedal that was falling apart.

When up to 50 in a single carriage way the vibrations were pretty rough, it was only after I had a go at a used jap that I realized that wasn't normal.

Used jap = same money, better overall.
