the problem with the Saab is that some of the parts are becoming increasingly sparse. My father has a 95 and had to wait 3 weeks whilst the garage found a bush of some description...

say whuu??

GSF stock just about every suspension component as do Euro Car Parts. Something tells me he was being lied to.

That would be my choice (and indeed I'm going to look at one this weekend to replace the 330d) but you definitely need £7k upwards not £5k and a stretch to £6k.

As much as I'd love one, to pick one up for £5-6k would be a high mileage, possibly poorly maintained one. Not the sort of car you want which has been neglected!

Are Mercs not up to par with BMW? My mate has an AMG something or other, and it's quick as fuck and he seems to like it. He's owned an M3 Evo before and hasn't mentioned it being worse.

I picked up a spotless example for £4.8K on 80,000 not so long ago. They are out there, milage shouldn't be too much of an issue as the engine isn't under much stress at all. Plenty of them on 130k+, plus no doubt the rag heads clock them when they get hold of them.

I think mercs are on a par with BMW, although perhaps tend to rust more. I've got an SL63 and an ML55, both AMGs, at the moment and they seem OK. I wouldn't go for the CL55 above though, the ABC problems (suspension) are inevitable and very expensive.

How much do older Monaro's go for now?

I'd be tempted by on've them, they're not clever or fancy, but sound great, go fast (sideways) detuned LS motor so fairly reliable and quite understated looks. Bit of a left-field choice, shit on fuel but who gives a fuck.

If the Vauxhall badge puts you off, stick a Holden one on instead - much cooler Thumbs Up

Audi S4s are good B6 Avant or the like, or an E39 M5. Dunno if you'll get a clean M5 for 6k, but maybe the 530-540i, with LSD and all the trimmings?

Few years back I had a brand new F10 530D, it did everything superbly, it was as good and comfortable as and E39 and handled like an E34.

Then it got swapped for a newer (800 miles on the clock) E320 Merc, and it was fucking shit, not a little shit but utter dog shit, sounded terrible, drove terrible, everything was everywhere, pointless features even my mum complained about it constantly lighting up the rear tyres and just how terrible it was.... I parked it in local car park and told the insurance company where it was and the keys were in it, rather drive a van.

One of my work colleagues sold a tidy CLK55 AMG last year for £4K; that will whip the arse off most things and no need for any work.

Not true I own a saab 9-5 aero & even though it's 11 years old parts are plentiful mainly because they don't need replacing all that often. I believe saab are also back in business or are about to start manufacturing again. Thumbs Up

If that is true then thats fab news, the demise of Saab was one of the sadest points in recent automotive history imo.

I'm not getting too excited about the rebirth of Saab.

The factory has been bought by a Chinese consortium (NEVS) but they haven't got the parts operation, nor have they got the logo or the rights to anything 9-5 related, so they're churning out a few 9-3s, with a view to building an all electric car at some point.

Has your Mum now learned how to drive and/or turn on the traction control?

To be fair I've been looking at E46 M3's for a while now and there are some dogs in the 5-65 price range.

HOWEVER I saw one with 80k miles, mint with a load of extras go for 5800 on ebay.... so they do come up every now and again.

Also e36 M3's are an option as well as for that kind of money you should be able to get a 1 owner from new example with low mileage.

Have a browse and you might find a nice one.

Going to my next car Smile.

Weird, never been a problem on any of the Mercs I've owned and driven, including the E320 I've had for the last three years.

I found the seats are aesthetically pleasing on the eye, but that's about it rest of the car was dire, certainly would not pay any money for one.
