That machine is amazing. How the hell does it work?

Are you planning on a low budget build or is it pay whatever it costs?

Like anything I always plan to do a budget build but I like to do things right. Part of the enjoyment of these projects is the searching for a better deal. For instance, a piston kit should cost around £110. You can fit a 86-96 CR250 piston and I've found a couple on Ebay for £40. Not cheap but a significant saving. It's the problem with engines, you can't make many replacement parts in your average garage. I always find it's where the biggest part of the budget goes for obvious reasons. This engine has been unlucky with the high cost stuff being knackered. I just need to find reed valves and a clutch kit going cheap and all will be well Wink

That particular CMM was a bargain at £70k. On top of the original cost I added a scanning probe, accurate to a couple of microns. Cost for the probe was around £30k.

The should be some sort of moral implications about saying 'a bargain at £70k' and '£40, it's not cheap but...' lol. Hope the build goes well though

I has a feeling the oil around the the output shaft is from either the clutch or where i've spilt oil down it when topping the box up. I'd definately scrap the rings, there was a bit of gap between rings & bore.

The oil is on the opposite side matey. There should be a gap between the rings and bore, I think the spec is around 0.3 - 0.7mm. The rings are fine but it seems a little pointless fitting them to a new piston.

Ah couldn't remember which side it was. Aye i know but it seemed fairly big looking up the bore with the piston still in. Obv not too bad, you got access to fancy tools to measure these things for you

It's all in context, it should have been closer to £120k. Welcome to the world of automotive manufacturing.

No, I just buy them. Where I work has over a dozen of those type. They also own several laser scanners worth roughly £1.5m in total which are very cool. I'll have to scan a part just for the hell of it.

As promised.

Basic setup. This is a GOM system which is a white light scanner using a high intensity fringe pattern projector and stereo cameras.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/P1010033-1.jpg

The fringe pattern is projected onto part to and the system analyses the deviations of the lines to create a 3D map.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/P1010038-1.jpg

Raw data.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/P1010040-1.jpg

The data is cleaned and meshed to create a 3D model. I've added some basic measurements to show the accuracy.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/P1010046-1.jpg

A very quick video to show that it is a 3D model and not just a photo.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/th_P1010047.jpg

It took roughly 30 minutes to capture and process the data.

Stupidly slow I know but there is a slightly bike related reason. I was going to spend the holiday sorting out the bike but it was too cold so I started doing something that I've been planning for the last 8 years, insulate the garage.
Door was easy, not attractive but effective. Two big sheets of polystyrene from wickes and a roll of masking tape.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/PC290963Medium.jpg

Next the roof. The joists were filled with insulation and then cladding fitted underneath to help keep the heat in, reflect the light and make it look pretty.

Before
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/PC290960Medium.jpg

After
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/PC290961Medium.jpg

Yeah only half done but should be finished tomorrow.

Gas Gas wise the exterior of the cases are degreased and all the bearing and seals are out, thanks to Petes suggestion and a gas barbeque. Cases are now ready for a soak in some gunk then I'll remove any dodgy paint and give them a blast with BBQ paint or something.

https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/PC290968Medium.jpg

I've sourced all the bearing and seals. Total cost, if I was to replace everyone of them is a bit under £100 although I should be able to knock a bit off that by shopping around.

The entire contents of the engine fit well in a small washing up bowl. Bagging up is a good way of reminding me where bits go.

Ummmmmm I love the smell of paint in the morning.

A couple of parts are done.

https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/PC300970Medium.jpg

Really liking the finish. A home bargains kind of shop was selling small cans of heat resistant matt paint for a £1 so I thought I would give it a go.

https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/PC300975Medium.jpg

No idea if it's down to the magnesium alloy of the covers but the effect is superb for a spray can. Really liking it.
