Cheers Thumbs Up

Got bored of waiting for parts again.

I have an old set of levers that were looking very scruffy so I decided to attack them with the aim of making them lighter and less wind resistant.

The method works for GP bikes so why not mine, that and I was going to throw them away anyway.

Old school cool or stupidly unsafe?

Just noticed - cheers for the unrelated bad karma Watchman Rolling Eyes

Recently won a new secondhand clutch lever and perch off the bay because it looked good in the picture, seller failed to mention it had been through the gravel in the description though. Which made more work for me.
Anyway, all stripped, painted, regreased and bolted up.

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1220.jpg

With the nice weather decided to get the temp engine painted.

Also cut the sprocket cover down as per the HRC TT-F3 manual and painted it.

The billet quick action throttle arrived, nice cheap new part and dug out the throttle and clutch cables.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1250.jpg

New grips and guards, didn't want to skimp on these tbh

Oil'd, greased, glued and lockwired together
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1254.jpg

Bit more engine prep before it goes into the chassis. Filter, water pipes and bolts with the threads run through with a tap all done.

Turned this mess into something usable. The Reg Rec plug was chopped off the other loom and wired into this one. Aswell as the whole lot being cleaned and retaped.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1271.jpg

Mounted quite a few bits here, lhs grip glued and lockwired on, rhs switchgear mounted (hole drilled), quick action throttle and clutch cables.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1286.jpg

How the bike sits at the moment with its loom in the correct place.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1287.jpg

Few final parts of the loom to be cleaned and mounted later.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1291.jpg

Need to get a box of parts zinc coated now before I get the engine in.

Tim your attention to detail mesmirises me and this is only meant to be a rough vfr out of spares. My only negative comment is i hate those grips! The plain grey renthals would look so much better, sorry...

They do look chav-tastic as fuck. But i recall from the previous thread that they have a protective sticker over them that makes them look like that. When removed they're grey.

Was sick of looking at the manky rear shock and I managed to get (rather cheaply) a BMW s1000rr rear shock and RVF lower linkages to raise the ride height.

Wonder what suspension properties cardboard has Very Happy
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1352.jpg

Both together.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1349.jpg

So far I have had to skim the top of the bmw shock to 38.4mm across to fit the chassis and change to a 800lbs spring. The guys at HM Racing have said to me it'll definately need revalving as the rebound isnt great from the factory but also said to set the sag before spending any money with them.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1355.jpg

Will hopefully have it in the bike at the weekend and will report back any more mods that were needed.

Ok well I got the shock in tonight.

All that was needed was to file the frame back slightly on the back of the undertray mount. 3mm approx.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1359.jpg

All torqued up with one half of the RVF linkage, waiting on the other half to come back from zinc coating.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1361.jpg

After reading through the BMW riders manual Ive set it to normal riding for the compression and to hard race on the rebound to compensate for the valving. Will do as a starting point.

Hit another problem, this time with the shorter RVF linkages.
With the wider spring, it fouls on the swingarm, not even allowing me to get all the linkage bolts in.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1373.jpg

So this bike will be running all VFR lower linkages.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1374.jpg
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1375.jpg

Also did a bit more work to the engine with all the zinc'd parts back. Will get some pics when all bolted up.

Got some work done to the engine, cheeky bar steward who sold me the engine snapped on of the exhaust studs and swapped it round. So of course it was too short. Luckly I had a spare stud set and gaskets which allowed me to get the manifold on.

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1376.jpg

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1378.jpg

Just waiting on a few more bits and it can go in the rolling chassis.

Want to figure out a way of testing them off the bike really.
I have another set of levers that can be used.

With the better half away for the night I got some more garage time in. A friend from 400GB kindly donated two fooked undertrays to me, with my intention being to make one good one. Also to lose some of the un-needed plastic.

Started off like this.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1387.jpg

Ended up like this. The bike will be on a daytime MOT, which is why I have kept the number plate mount. Kept the rear reflector for the lols as they always seem to get cut off.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1396.jpg

Had some left over reflective material so used it to replace the rotten one that covers the battery box.
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20nc30%20trackbike/IMG_1394.jpg

All cleaned and fitted to the bike, just missing one bolt which I cant find atm.

Maybe this one at some point, no plans for it any time soon though

Pulled some more spares out and wired up the ECU and de-restriction box.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Bought a Tyga RCV front fender a while ago for my other bike. Having no use for it now I asked Gavin at Jap4 if it could be swapped it for a carbon nc30 one, and he kindly said yes if a bought something. So I ordered up a new clear screen (something I don't have) for this bike and a new can for my other project.

Also been collecting graphics and stickers for ages, should be able to decent TT scheme from this lot.

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/Honda%20VFR%20Race%20fairing/IMG_1436.jpg

And then I found more!
https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/Honda%20VFR%20Race%20fairing/IMG_1443.jpg

Also ordered a new number plate as the chassis only came with the logbook.

Also checked all the charging system is working correctly, no open or short circuits. Checked the coils are OK to use and that the wires on the loom for the regrec have good continuity.

All cleaned and fitted.

I've always wondered how to paint things properly.
I see you have painted you engine matte black - did you just spray it directly, or did you prime it first?

I worked on customizing a PC case - primed the chassis and sprayed it matte black , but the paint just came off with a hard rub.
very annoying. Neutral

I'ver read your other thread and am generally quite impressed but I'm not sure they're very safe, shouldn't the holes be drilled through in the opposite plane to the force exerted to maintain the strength? Like these https://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS_iu750np4GrEkMtdecLBhQuhtnfuO0YpYOZ7pgiY-3q2hBLvyibXWrWu34Q

The idea was to let the air pass through them so as not to cause any drag that could pull the lever in, mainly because the bike is capable of warp like speeds Wink . I weighed them mainly out of interest.

Going to try and rig up a jig to see what the maximum force I can extert through my hand, double it and see if the lever can withstand it.
Normal levers will break in a crash situation so am not worried about that.

https://www.kurveygirl.com/Brembo/KG%20-%20Brembo%20-%20MotoGP%20Lever%20-%20RCS%20-%20Master%20-%20800_wm.jpg

That's what they do in MotoGP to stop the 215mph wind from putting the front brake on.
You won't snap the levers by hand even putting all your strength into them, but in a crash they will snap and could then stab into you. That's why they have the bobble on the end.
