Is it possible to get a decentish bike for about £500? and by decent I mean mechanically and good C&S, Tyres etc. Don't really mind about the cosmetics for now

A few years ago I sold my perfectly useable condition GPZ500 for a couple of hundred rubs over that, so I'd go with yes.

there is an r6 on ebay that has come up as cat D for £500, think its basically he has crashed, insurance gave him bike back to cut the amount they have to give him back and hes selling to recoup some money. If I could afford the insurance Id get that myself.

I sold a fully functional xj600n for £400, OTR too.

So yes, but look for the non popular choices.

About £500?

My CG cost me £530. Never once let me down, spot on. Put 15k on it and it's still going strong, use it as my work bike at the minute.

ZZR250, £650. Was fine, until it died.

ER5, £695. Fitted a new fuel tap and it's spot on now, no issues whatsoever.

No.

I bought an XJ for £250. It was in a few bits and generally needed cleaning and putting together, but it ran, passed an MOT, got used for a year then sold for about £600.
It's doable, but getting harder.

If you can hang on a bit... I might be selling my cbr.

All the consumeables are good.

I threw it down the road the other week on a roundabout. Was going a little to quick for the cold conditions.

As such the right hand side is a little scratched up (had a crash bung so its not to bad).

Hit the kerb with a bit of speed but not to much. I need to check that everything is still straight and check it runs but if it does and I decide to sell it I'll let you know.

It only owes me £500 so as long as I get my money back I'm not bothered.

At this kind of price point you want to be looking at the condition of the bikes rather than the specific model. You can't afford to be picky. Someone on here said a good example of a shit bike is better than a shit example of a good bike.

An unrestricted licence helps as it will open up your feasible choices drastically. For instance an XJ900 probably wouldn't be worth paying £500 then chucking money at it to restrict it, whereas 500 on the road and the freedom to ride it straight home would make it a decent buy.

While 125s might be cheaper to run the purchase price of these bikes is inflated which offsets this. I reckon this is going to become an even bigger problem once the new licencing laws kick in.

Im not on a restricted license.

That CBR sounds interesting, im not in any rush as im busy for about a month and then I should be looking to get something hopefully.

I get what you mean about looking at the condition first at this price though

My GPZ (see sig) cost me £500 - but then some for fixing. Just saw an identical one - year, colour everything - go for £130 on eBay. Exhaust was blowing and there was an intermittent ignition issue apparently but still! T&T! Kicking myself for not grabbing it for a donor for mine Crying or Very sad

I don't think that end of the market has really changed that much. I got mine for the same money last November.

As others have said, do-able but getting quite hard. If you want specific models to look for, XJ's are a decent starting point. The pre-divvy ones could almost be considered 'fun' too

How would you know? You paid £600 for a shed of a Bros with some kind of gypsy curse on it, after being warned that a 'cheap' bike could end up costing you that much more again to keep on the road... which it did. Wink

I agree on the "good example of a bad bike" - my £400 GPZ 305 has run sweet for a year with new brake pads, a front tyre (although it could have gone longer), and ghetto feeler-gauge fork seal and bean-tin exhaust bodges.

I was prepared to pay (and if I'd been sensible would have paid) more for 'better' bikes that could have easily needed a lot more done to them, so there's definitely an element of luck involved, and fortune favouring the delusional brave.

£500 got me my MZ skorpion (got a pic in profile), usually bargains like that I find you hear by word of mouth or local ads hell just a few months ago I was asking on here about a running/road ready VF500 interceptor going for £325.

Tends to be either older models of common bikes or rare unheard of models like those I just mentioned that go for low prices.
