I bought the Ducati because it was one of the bikes that I have always wanted to own, with its iconic looks and legendary handling, and on those points alone it scores 10 out of 10.

But unfortunately it lacks in the power department and I know what people will say “you should have bought a 916 or a 996” and maybe I should have but if I did that then it would not be worth doing the conversion and then what would I do with my spare time over the winter. Laughing

So the plan is to rip out the 750 lump and install a Suzuki tlr engine with a few tweaks.

The engine will be stripped down with all new bearing, seal, rings, oil pump and anything else that is worn or damaged.

I have a few performance mods lined up but I’m not sure how far to go with it yet.

This is how it did look

I can't help but think putting a big overly shouty TLR engine in this is going to ruin it.

Top marks for looks and imagination though

I might sell it, if I have to cut the airbox up to much to fit the tlr throttle bodies through it then I’ll look at selling it as long as I get a standard one back to use.

Ive heard of people doing this before, supposed to be a great mod.

The TLR motor is such a great motor, the bike it was originally in didnt get the best out of it.

Post lots of pics, i might consider doing this myself Smile.

Mmm.. pretty much the same motor but interwebs seems to believe a few more horses in the R version along with forged pistons.. but could be complete gash.

Noticeable difference, probably not.

The R motor is slightly better than the S in the way that it has forged pistons, slightly higher lift cams and water cooled oil system instead of air.
I believe the main differences between the engines are when you look at the early S engines (97) compared to the latter S or the R’s. They changed things like the clutch and the oil passage ways inside the engine.
These are only small updates but they do make a better motor.

The S is watercooled. Is this a different cooler you are on about?

Oil cooler i think he means, basically a rad that cools the oil.

The last owner changed the fairing because the originals had big holes drilled in them to take crash mushrooms and apparently the only decent ones he could find were from a 996.

Do not cut that airbox.

Sell it and get max money.

A 750 airbox holding back a 1000cc twin will not work, regardless of your fiddling.

Best bet in all honesty, not widely liked but pod filters.

Will take you a bit of faff to get it perfect, but will be far better than restricting its intake.

I take it the engine adds the rigidity to the frame?

^^^I may be completely wrong, but to my eye it looks like the engine hangs from the frame and would only add a small amount of rigidity.
Frame is very similar to my ST2 so would be interested if someone did know the answer.

engine is a stressed member.

it gives the frame a large portion of its strength.
