I had that headlight on my CBR, it was a generic eBay jobby and is ugly as dick IMO and was complete shit in the dark too. |

That bottom rad looks not long for this world. Also the flapper valves in the airbox seem to have been removed. |
I might go for purple with a gold stripe or something, not really decided on the paint work yet.
With regards to the headlights, they're fine for now. No it doesn't look fantastic but I will keep my eye out for some alternatives. I've not really decided styling wise what I want to do with the bike yet, I was more planning on stripping and rebuilding first and then worrying about that later.
The plan of action is to completely strip it now, I was thinking about not going right the way down because it's going to be hell trying to remove all the engine bolts and everything. They're fucked, but after taking a few bits off the rear and finding that most of the bolts holding the rear end together were finger tight, including the ones holding the sub fame on I think it's best for my own well being I make sure everything is done properly!
So, as I said I started stripping the rear end this afternoon. The seat unit came off nicely. The rear light was wobbling all over the place and that's down to a broken bracket so I'll have to fabricate a new one when I come to reinstalling that. I removed the exhausts and there were surprisingly no dramas getting the link pipes off. One required some persuasion but it came off eventually. I then started removing the exhaust wrap to see the state of the pipe underneath. It's not rotted through which is good, a little surface rust though which should buff out. I'm going to leave the wrap off, it looks so much better not on there!
Here's a picture:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130604_214801.jpg
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130604_214824.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/orb666/TL-Zeebub.jpg
The reason the wrap was on there is to cover that big dent, does anyone know how I might be able to get the out?
Here's how the bike stands now:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130604_214708.jpg
Next I'm going to remove that horrific rotary damper. It's all seized up (well the linkage certainly is) and replace it with hopefully a bitrubo rear shock if I can find one at a sensible price. It's looking to be around £450 for the shock at the moment, so I'm going to keep looking or keep an eye out for a second hand one. I'd rather not spend that unless I have to as an R1 rear shock conversion kit is £150 and that would be plenty good enough.
Bolts holding it all together are going to be fun to get off:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130604_214722.jpg
Tomorrow hopefully I'll get the subframe off and sort all this mess:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130604_214737.jpg
That's all for now. I need to find a way to prop the bike up as well so I can remove the rear wheel, swing arm and forks. I think I'm going to prop it up using the sump. I can the start to look at what else needs replacing and maybe order a few parts!
Hope you like, and suggestions to help me are welcome! ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

That pipe looks so much better without the wrap; I know why people use it in racing applications, but (IMHO) it does nothing for cosmetics, it always looks like repair bandage.
Can you not get the damaged section fabbed?
As for advice, all I can offer is I wouldn't even try and remove that shock nut the conventional way; you aren't going to be using it again, so use the minimum amount of effort and put a nut splitter on it. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I agree, the tape looks gash. I'm not a big fan. I think it was on to cover the dent to be honest but it's not going back on. The pipes are going to be polished like in that other picture.
I think I might be able to pry the dent out with some heat as I can access it now, so I might try that or take it to someone who knows that they're doing!
As for the nut, I've put some penetrating oil on over night and I'll get my bike breaker bar on it tomorrow with a decent socket and see what happens. I don't have a nut splitter, but your quite right and I might have to buy one! ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. You know what's going to happen........
You'll end up rounding the thing off, then hammering a too small socket on there, then wedging a spanner on the other end because the whole shooting match wants to spin round, all the while you'll be sweating your knackers off.
Instead, 30 seconds with a 10 quid nut splitter and a hammer and drift, the thing will be apart.
You know it makes sense......... ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Today's progress:
I had a fair bit of time to really tackle it today. I wanted to get as much done as possible. Luckily there were no major setbacks and the progress was good.
I started by removing all the crap from the subframe so it could be removed. Nothing in there once the ecu was removed:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_115400.jpg
One thing I'm going to try to tidy up when I put the bike back together is all of this here:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_123614.jpg
I'm hoping to move the battery box to under the seat as well as some other bits. Plus I'll also tidy up the loom and find somewhere better for the starter relay (probably under the rear seat too)
Once the subframe was off I decided to try and remove the exhaust. This was going to be my best friend for the next few mins:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_125141.jpg
With some serious heat and a big breaker bar I managed to remove the bolt clamping the two parts of the exhaust coming from the rear cylinder together as you can see here:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_125150.jpg
The bolt (fucked with no thread, lucky I managed to get it out), sorry the camera is out of focus here:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_125226.jpg
Then I propped the bike up on some wood by the sump (main reason for removing the exhaust was it was in the way) and started removing stuff from the rear of the bike including the rear calliper:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_144801.jpg
It's in a bit of a mess but one piston moved, the other I think will move with some persuasion the calliper will be fully rebuilt with new seals and pads when it goes back on the bike. Then It was time to tackle the rear suspension. Strangely all the bolts came off with ease, to easy in fact and I think they were undone in the hope it would 'unseize' the rear end caused by a seized damper and spring . The linkage is fine though, but this will all be replaced later.
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_144819.jpg
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_151024.jpg
So the rear end of the bike now looked like this:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_155650.jpg
Removed some other bits as well like the front brake, and the radiator assembly. I'll probably end up buying some Chinese rads as these ones are way past they're best. They're usable and if funds become really tight then I can clean and re-use them but I'd rather not:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_155658.jpg
Front brakes are pretty standard tokico 6 pots.... ie corroded to hell and all seized up but I've already re-built a pair of these about 3 weeks ago and so they should take to long to sort with new seals and everything else:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_155709.jpg
I do plan on changing the master cylinder for a radial one if I can get one at a decent price. I want a Brembo RCS but that's ££. Standard 19mm radial master cylinders are good enough, so if anyone has a 19mm master cyl knocking around drop me a PM.
Now there's a chance to see what the front of the engine looks like. It's pretty bad:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_155737.jpg
It's all going to come off and be repainted anyway.
So at time for afternoon tea, the bike was down to this state:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_162635.jpg
Then it was time to remove the front end. The forks need new seals and oil. I'm tempted to get them re-anodized gold and I might invest in some ktech springs, but again it all depends on funds. First it means sorting through this mess:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_171939.jpg
I've got no idea what's going on here:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_171945.jpg
So I got the headlight unit off as well as the forks with no dramas. The forks were a pain to get out the yokes and I ended up hitting them on the top with a rubber mallet, not sure if they're meant to be this tight fitting? But the came out none the less.
I then tackled the airbox and throttle bodies. I was going to leave them on the engine and when the engine was out the frame but changed my mind. I literally have no idea what's going on here either:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_123637.jpg
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_173647.jpg
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_175039.jpg
Someone has clearly been up to something, but I know the bike runs so as much as I hate it have to keep everything in order (or try to atleast). I'm trying to take things off in as complete form as possible, then when I come to rebuild the bike I can strip and clean each individual bit on the day so I don't forget how it all goes. I've also labelled the pipes to try and help as well as taking loads of photos and such.
Not so bad with the airbox and all that shite off:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_181306.jpg
Throttle bodies out:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_220209.jpg
Another picture of the bike:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_220219.jpg
And bits:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130605_220234.jpg
So that's it for today.
Tomorrows plan is to get the engine out the frame and see what we're dealing with! Could be fun, had a quick look at some of the bolts holding the engine in place. I'm not hopeful ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

mysterious_rider wrote: | Why are you taking it to pieces? If it's a runner just tidy it up. |
For 3 reasons.
Firstly, it's a mess and it will need new bearings frame wise. Every bearing I've pulled off it has been rough. Before it was stood in my mates garage for 3 years it was stood for another 5.
And secondly I don't trust the competence of the person that has fiddled with the bike in the past. Things like the rear axle nut were barely done up and the sub frame was finger tight. I'd rather the bike didn't fall apart on me because I'd cut a few corners.
And thirdly so I can get all the fixings re-coated, clean every thing and make it look half decent again.
I hate old bikes where nothing works so if I'm I'm going to ride this is going going to be like a new bike. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Sadly it's just been neglected all its life so a bit of tl won't hurt!

Thanks, that's a good thread. One of the mods later down the line will be a PCIII with a custom map so that will sort that out.
I also looked into the airbox stuff a bit more, seems I can remove all that pipework as it's looped onto itself and blank it off.
The bike is currently running an open airbox, so I need to look into that as well and see what the drill is with it, and if I'm better to get an air box top to go with it all or not.
This morning I managed to finish stripping the bike. I cut through the chain and that's soaking in a bowl of oil, as believe it or not, after just wiping it over with some chain cleaner the chains mint underneath . So I might be able to save it, I might not. We'll see.
I then put the engine and frame on the ground and undid the rest of the engine mount bolts. Once they were undone I just lifted the frame off the top of the engine and was left with all this (excuse the mess):
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_131703.jpg
I've also emailed hyperpro about getting this refurbished as it's actually a decent bit of kit. Plus does anyone know how the bolt holing it on the frame undoes? It seems pretty stuck on there and there's nothing to get any purchase on, is it just a molegrips situation?
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_132237.jpg
I decided then to start cleaning stuff. Firstly I decided to tackle the swing arm which looked like this:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_134057.jpg
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_134103.jpg
And during:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_141629.jpg
I'm now sat here after being unsuccessful pricing up the cost of all the new parts I want for the bike. There's a pretty big dent in the swing arm so I might have to replace it. I don't think it's a major issue. I'll get a photo of it when it's all clean. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Pop the cap off the bolt and use an allen key.
Is it leaking? if not, why refurb it? Waste of money. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. It's leaking and it's fucked lol. The action moving it from side to side feels like it's got sand not oil in haha ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Loving the updates, really interesting thread, out of interest who are you planning on sorting the corrosion that didn't go after cleaning? Is their an alternative to re-zincing? ____________________ Malaguti F12 Phantom-Dead, Suzuki AY50- Dead, NRG power DD LQ, CBR125.

I'm going to hopefully bead blast all the fittings then send them to be re-zinced. The bead blasting will remove all the corrosion and and take everything back to bare metal. There There are some bits which I will be to paint instead but there shouldn't be much. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. So as can be seen above I started cleaning shit today. The swing arm was horrible, caked in layers and layers of oil and shit. I spent ages there with gunk trying to clean it all off, getting nowhere. So I pulled out a can of brake cleaner, the oil shit itself at the sight of that Best stuff I've ever used, but my god it's expensive and goes quick!
I now have a presentable swingarm . So before:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_134057.jpg
After:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_165006.jpg
The roller bearing inside is actually okay, but I'll replace it anyway. The two sealed bearings on the other side of the swing-arm are a little rough. Nothing dangerous but certainly the originals and a refresh won't hurt. At £25 for the full set, it's not the end of the world.
I then took the frame outside to be cleaned as well. Same procedure as before and got a little system going which seemed to work well. Some pictures of the frame before:

This was with the worst off:

And then finished:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_210023.jpg
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_210030.jpg
I then removed the triple clamp to reveal the condition of the head bearings. These were on the list to replace, but tbh, I don't think there is any point. They're like new. My guess is they were done 3 years ago when the bike was last one the road:
https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130607_211049.jpg
So the next job is to clean that triple clamp up and repaint it silver. I need to order the bearings I need for the swing-arm, and I'm also going to replace the bearings in the linkage which will also need to be cleaned up.
The next job is to find myself a shock at a decent price. I think I've settled on a Bitubo unit, but it's coming in at £450 so I'm going to keep an eye out over the couple of weeks to see if anything second hand comes up or if I can get a new unit for less than £400.
Progress will probably slow down a bit now, I need to decide on a paint scheme so I can get some paint. I think I'll end up going with matt black for the engine and I'm nearly settled on purple and gold for the tank and other bits.
I'm going to have a good clear up too over the weekend, bag all the nuts and bolts up ready to blast (need to find a blaster I can use or buy one) and get them done asap so they can be sent off to be coated.
Once that's done it's start ordering the other parts I need and clean up the rest of the bits ready to be put back on. Feeling good so far! ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.
