I've hit a minor roadblock.
Having pulled the carbs off the bike, I got them up to my flat, to be disassembled and fiddled with in a position of relative comfort. Hurrah for kitchen worktops:

I'd already done some minor cleaning of the carb set at this point, so they're not quite as hideous as they were when I originally got them off the bike.

Of course, I hadn't managed to remove the remnants of the brambles that had been growing through it yet.
I was a little concerned that the carbs would have thoroughly gummed up internals, having been sat for a decade and all that. So, I started pulling one apart, just to have a look:

Float bowl is a bit minging, but nothing irretrievable. Having squirted a bit of 3-in-1 through the jets, I'm satisfied that they're not blocked.
I also decided that it'd be best to take a look at at least one needle, just to check that there wasn't any insane wear:

The diaphragm's in very nice condition, too:

Remarkably clean in there - a bit of grit has migrated in, but that's largely down to me moving the carbs about a lot.
I've discovered where the seizure appears to be - on the main rail, from the left: between the pulley and the first spring and there's also some impediment to free movement under the third spring, too.

Anyway - I'm hoping that the penetrating oil that I've saturated the areas involved with has soaked in now. I'm going to go agitate a throttle linkage. ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

Right. Got as far as removing the airbox plate, and separating the carbs.

The main culprit for stiffness is this carb: the one with the throttle cable pulley on it.

As it stands, I've gone and removed the circlip and nylon washer on the throttle shaft that leads into the carb body, and I've gone and sprayed some 3-in-1 under the fibre washer (at least, I presume it's a fibre washer, it's too compressible to be a bush). The movement of the throttle shaft is a little easier now, but only a little. It's looking like I'll have to take the shaft out, which does lead to the question - is there anything special about the screws that hold the butterfly on, or are they just bog-standard countersunk machine screws that have had the ends flared? ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

Ste: I'm not entirely sure how you'd go about verbally abusing someone with a potato but I'm sure it's possible. |
