Anyone know how to use Adblock to prevent seeing this text? All the references I can find relate back to previous years and no longer block the bright yellow hideous begging bar.

https://easylist.adblockplus.org/blog/2010/11/16/wikimedia-fundraising-banners

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/12/01/penniless_and_desperate_wikipedia_sits_on_60m_cash/

Thanks Smile

Edit:
Code:
||meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:BannerLoader?*
Appears to block it.

Is it really that much of an inconvenience to you?
I understand some things are irritating in life but when I were a lad ( Wink ) if I wanted to know how big Ron Jeremy's cock was I'd have to get on my bicycle, think about the best place to find such information and then go search. I can now type three words into my gadget and, hey presto, more mind boggling info than I could have imagined possible and the price? A small strip of yellow that may occupy as much as 1% of my screen, boy it's a tough life Wink

They've got plenty of money. Huge great tracts of it. They piss it away on defective projects and defective people. The actual site would take about $3m a year to run, and they've panhandled $60m in assets, like those homeless beggars who go back to their council gaffs and tuck in to swan cutlets every night.

Yeah Wiki is a damn sight more useful than £1.

It was the starting point of every bit of uni coursework. And usually the most useful source - it is not less accurate than Encyclopaedia Britannica

I gave them 20 GBP a few years ago. If everyone who uses them gave them as much as I did, they'd have billions. I don't want to hear from them again for some time, and I especially don't agree with the aggressive style of their newer banners.

I use adblock to hide the banners. Adblock Element Hiding Helper - an additional plugin - makes it easy to select elements on page to create a new adblock rule.

That's disturbing, I wrote two articles and frequently edit several more.
People are too trusting if they consider it a reliable source.

I have seen sentences wot I wrote quoted in other articles - which made me larf Laughing

People are just foolish if they consider it their only source.

I used to use it as the starting point and main source for pretty much everything. But would always use other more trusted (ideally peer-reviewed or well known reputable) sources for fact validation.

sorry but their whole current concept is holding them back.
they should open it up to non intrusive adverting and they would not need the donations but as humans are greedy cretins they probably still would ask for it despite the advertising revenue.

The revenue they would receive would be monumental

if it disappeared tomorrow another similar site would take its place and accept advertising

i wont be making a donation but i will still use it if thats unfair and immoral i couldnt care less
if that makes me bad human good i never said i wanted to be good or kind lol!

I donated some money last time, have had several emails this time begging for more money.

I love how they say if we all donate now we won't be bothered again for the rest of the year. In 3 weeks time, the messages will be back, then? Shocked

I thought the point of wikipedia was not that you could use it to research your educational work, but that you could change it to support whatever you happened have written at 2am on the morning you had to have it handed in?

Slightly on/off-topic I see Firefox/Mozilla are holding out the begging bowl too.

First it was those "You chose Freedom and Independence! Now sign up for the newsletter!" splash nags, and now the panhandling starts.Thumbs Down

Firefox used to be about technological merit. But Chrome just destroys it now as a development platform, and the can rattling is all the incentive that I needed to ditch Firefox altogether.

Sad times, but the world moves on.

On the firfox thing - have they recently changed the search bar thingy?
Wasn't sure if it was a new version of firefox or some extension from a program I THOUGHT was reputable.

Do the search providers now appear at the bottom in a horizontal row of icons, with it defaulting to google?

I did actually google it when it changed, but nothing obvious came up.

I got annoyed with the previous versions which would default to your selected site when you typed in the address bar, but liked leaving it at my chosen site for the search box.
