For the past few days my bike (ER6 2012) has started to run horribly when cold leading to stalls.

The bike starts just fine, but turns over once and then stalls. Other times it'll not happen as quickly but slowly drop from 1200 by 100rpm at a time until it drops causing a stall.

To counter this I've had to give it constant throttle while cold, though after 5-10 minutes of warming up it's back to normal with a healthy idle speed.

Things i've noted so far:
Sounds like it's misfiring until it warms up too.
Adjusting the idle speed does nothing while cold.
Also happens in first and neutral so it's not clutch related.

Last thing done was a full tank of petrol on Sunday, then 200 meters up the road back home. Next day the issues started. Maybe fuel related?

Any ideas?

when warm turn the idle speed up 500rpm. see if that sorts it.

try a higher 98 ron octane fuel from another retailer ie. not supermarket fuel.

Tried that by putting idle 1k + so when warm it was about 2400 rpm idle. Let it cool, same issue.

When it first starts cold it also smells really strongly of concentrated emissions, easily about 3x more than normal, but once its up to temp again it returns to normal.

Half way through the tank, i'll try higher octane when it's nearly empty.

Going to check the spark plugs tomorrow for fouling and the coils.

Any other ideas anyone in the mean time?

Appreciate the suggestion but the bike is FI, so it's not a carb issue.

Really has me stumped and I'm not ready to quit and take it to a garage just yet!

If it's cold running problems are you sure it's not a duff /dying sensor?

You could be right on the money. Spark plugs changed out and fine, so i'm thinking throttle position sensor might be the next area to look at given the bike only has 11k miles on the clocks.

I'll report back if I find out what the issue is.

Most probably it doesn't like the cold.

2 or 3 years back when we got the really cold temperatures, my Er6 would actually excelerate by itself, forcing my to use the kill switch. This happened on about 3 or 4 occasions.

Yep kawakid, similar to what happened towards the end for me too, it would shoot up to 5k revs and refuse to drop lower.

Got frustrated after wasting days and took it to a garage, guy said the bikes notorious for this fault and he was constantly fixing a local schools er6s.

Needed new throttle bodies, ignition coils and spark plugs. Bike is running better than ever, but if it's having these issues at 11k I think summer might be the time to swap it out for a 750 Gixxer...

Mine does that in the cold. I tend to be a start and go, rather than start and warm up. If you start and leave idling, as soon as it drops off the fast idle it struggles to idle. Almost as if the fast idle isn't enough for the colder temperatures.

I generally just get on and ride whilst on fast idle, occasionally when I stop at the mini roundabout a mile down the road it can want to die, but a smidge of throttle stops that. After that it's fine.

I just live with it. I swapped plugs, coils and everything. It's just the way it is.

I have attempted to adjust the idle speed, my suggestion, don't do this, the adjuster is crap.
