has anyone else wondered where the names of bikes come from or mean?

examples

RVF
CBR
FZR
GSXR
ZX6R

almost all the sportbikes just have a code and im just wondering if these are meant to mean anything or just random letters that sounded good when put together.

According to the Japanese wikipedia NSR means "New Style Racing Printer"

Theres no hard and fast rule for it, but some letters seem to carry the same meaning for some makes (then get randomly ignored on a new model) for example X usually means transversely mounted, an R in the model usually means racier than it could be, wheras an F usually stands for unracier (fatter?) though sometimes it means faired, and sometimes it means unfaired (ER-6F and NSR125F)

I like to think FZR stands for four ztroke racing (as opposed to TZR)

GSXR: Generic Shit XXX-TREME REVAMP

I reckon we should all put the old Police monikers on all bikes, not sure which would sound the worst though.

Zulu Zulu Romeo
Victor Foxtrot Romeo

Actually, second thoughts, that's a crap idea Mr. Green

Cheers

Hi

Hondas CB was meant to stand for City Bike, so CBR would be something like City Bike Replica.

All the best
