Yup
Sitting there idling, I'm standing about 6 foot away, and it spontaneously engages first gear and runs itself into a wall, falls over and cracks the screen on someones car What the f**k?

No crash bungs or anything, the bike just "bounced" off the wall with the front tire and then fell onto a car, smashing the screen and possibly bending the front subframe a bit.
A new screen will do for a repair, I cant see any damage to the metalwork or fairings so...
I always remember watching a small child sitting on an R1 redlining the engine, and wondering if it's possible for a bike to spontaneoulsy engage from neutral... Now I know
If only my bike didn't make peak torque at idle speed, it might have just stalled
No damage to the car luckily. ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

Unlucky mate, that's really unfortunate. Maybe worth a post in the workshop section so you might find the cause and fix it?
At least the car wasn't damaged and the bike damage minimal.
Not really sure if that qualifies as an entry in the Spill Counter |

The sidestand switch was problematic in the past so I disconnected it - It used to think the bike was in gear when it wasnt, so would prevent me from running the engine on the sidestand.
I think the engine stalled anyway, but it was on choke so one quick thump at 2,000rpm was enough to send it on its way. ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

If you sit in first gear idling and just snap the clutch out it will give quite a violent jerk. Easily enough to knock it off the stand.
Was it far from the wall? ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

It was about 5 foot from the wall and it did definately engage in first gear, no doubt about it. It was in gear when I picked it up, and it was instantly obvious what happened.
Nobody was touching the bike, it was started about 20 seconds earlier, and it was just idling...
Obviouslly being a 660 single it vibrates a fair bit, but its never done this before. ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

I have a XTZ 660 which uses the same engine as you and this happening has always been a worry of mine, apparently it is know to happen on these bikes.
I read a scare story or 2 about it for my bike when reading about disconnecting all the safety relays, as standard you cant even start the bike without the sidestand down and the clutch pulled in and it wont idle with the stand down either so leaving it connected would have meant holding the bike up whilst it warms up every morning I felt I had no choice but to disconnect them.
However I am now more worried than before that it will try and run away from me next time I start her up especially as when I start her my car is right in front of it.
I'd say that its probably the vibes from the long stroke that bounced it into gear, dunno if there is much that can be done about it to stop it happening again though. ____________________ lifes pretty short, you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it |

Yeah as you said I had to sit on my bike whilst it warmed up, hence why I disconnected that switch. To be honest I think the engine is so big that even if it cutout it would still have jerked the bike off the sidestand.
I think Ill just try and leave the front wheel against a wall when the bike is idling in future, so that it will just stall without falling over... ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

Right, so there was a dimple on the gear selector rod, and a ballbearing on a spring was being pressed into it to provide some resistance?
I might have to ask the SZR mailing list about that. ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |
