Hey,

I dismantled my GPZ 400R about 6 months ago for a complete rebuild.
After taking the rear shock out i left it on my work bench. When i came back to it this week i noticed that loads of oil had come out of the air valve (I loosened this off when the shock was taken off)

I've checked in the manual and theres no mention of oil levels for the rear shock.

Does anyone know how much oil should go back into it?

Cheers in advance.
Shaun

You sir have killed your shock.

Phone ABE on 020-8858-9052 and ask if they will re-con it.

If this is the type of shock I think it is that air valve was for high pressure nitrogen.

Yup, you need to have your shock looked at by a specialist, it's not a DIY job.

The oil didn't come out of the air valve itself. It came out of the hole into which the valve sits.

The hose unscrews off the cylinder for replacement, according to the book.

The oil wasnt under any pressure, the air inside was released when i took the valve out, as per the book.

Its simple a hose which attaches to the shock.

Im sure all it needs is oil putting in, the hose attaching and then pumping up again with air, just like my front shocks.

Please tell me your thoughts. Fcucked or just needs oil?

Thanks for your help.

I didn't say it did come out of the valve.

If you have a book that tells you how to strip and repair the shock why are you asking here?

Air causes cavitation in oil, nitrogen doesn't. The gas places the oil under pressure. How can you tell the difference between nitrogen and air?

No it's not unless its simply a hose with a schraeder valve on the end. In which case its an air shock and you use the air to adjust preload. These were fitted on the GT550 but I've never seen one on a GPZ400

You're probably wrong.

Hey,

Yer its got a ??schrader?? air valve on it, PLUS an air gauge.

Same as the 600r, just different engine.

I would use the manual, apart from it says no where about oil levels. Oil came out so oil must go back in.

Heres a picture.

Thanks for your time.

That looks nothing like shock my 600R had on it. That looks like a GT550 shock. You sure thats the right shock for the bike?

GPZ400R unitrak did have air suspension on the rear, my unreliable memory is that it could be run up to about 200KPa?

Best suggestion is to find a GPZ forum and ask there. The only one I know is Dutch but most will reply in english for you. https://www.gpx-gpz.net

If you have any problems then give me a shout and I'll ask on there for you.
