Well Windows Vista should be released later on this year, but with some high specs needed to run, Microsoft have released a program that determines which aspects of your PC would need to be upgraded in order to run Windows Vista.

The system requirements for Windows Vista are: -

Core components
A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
512 MB of system memory.
A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

To run the premium features
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
1 GB of system memory.
A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.
128 MB of graphics memory.
40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
DVD-ROM Drive3.
Audio output capability.
Internet access capability.

The Compatibility program can be downloaded from here...

https://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx

Here is how my laptop faired. (It will pretty much never be able to be upgraded for premium products.)

Yep - i looked on the net also and found a site that said that windows vista won't detect disks connected to the raid controller and even if you can get it to see them don't get it to partition it or you'll lose everything in the array - i don't want to try it any further but thanks... i'll probably either install it on my work pc or put an ide disk into my pc just for vista.

My laptop is realtively close actually, to run the core stuff. I'd neeed to change my RAM used for system back to 512, and free up 14GBs of space. Laughing I have 700MBs of a 60GB HDD left. Brick Wall

Well I do have 512MB of RAM but 64MB is being shared with graphics.

Gonna upgraded to 2GB of RAM in the laptop and then allow shared Graphics Memory up to 128MB. Smile

So i take it that the people saying they wont upgrade or why should i upgrade are still using windows 3.1 or maybe windows 95? after all you didn't have to buy /use xp did you? you didn't have to upgrade from 95 to 98 did you ? but you did!
Change happens and no matter how much you hate windows or Bill if it wasn't for him you wouldn't be sitting on your PC typing here or playing games, in fact i very much doubt that many homes would even have a home PC if it was not for windows.

Within sight of where I'm sitting, there are 3 PCs, 1 laptop and 1 Sun E450. 1 is running XP pro, 1 x Solaris, 1 x BSD and 2 x Linux. I only keep XP for the games and the odd bit of software not available for Linux. And I don't mean viruses, trojans or spyware either.

The last copy of windows I bought was 3.1. I don't see that ever changing...

And how many home users have heard of anything else apart from windows?

I really dont see how you feel you have a argument about windows bringing pc's to the mass's.

Most of the ones who don't have a flashing 00:00 on their video recorder.

Agreed - I'm sure you don't see too.

Most home users I know usually encounter Linux when I give them a Live CD so that then can still use their PC after Windows shiteware has trashed it.

Windows is a "popular" OS in the same sense that colds are a "popular" disease or cancer is a "popular" death.

As of 2006, Microsoft Windows is the world's most popular operating system for use on personal computers. Created by Microsoft, versions of Windows designed for servers, embedded devices, and other platforms also exist. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment named Windows in November, 1985, as an add-on to MS-DOS in response to the growing trend of graphical user interfaces popularised by the Apple Macintosh. Microsoft Windows eventually came to dominate the world personal computer market with market analysts like IDC estimating that Windows has around 90% of the client operating system market

So thats is one hell of a bad cold.
Not from MS before you say it.

Totally irrelevant to my point.

There is multiple OS now, there is choice and Windows isn't that expensive anymore.

Far lower prices, how? Could Linux get cheaper? Macs are more expensive to buy than Windows now, without Windows competition they'd probably still be at the £1200 basic minimum personal computer mark.
