I've always wondered... what is it that governs the first to second gear shift without going in to neutral instead? Is it speed, or engine rpm?

I only ask because of gearing questions in another thread (didn't want to hijack). I remember when I first started out biking a few years back, this happened occasionally - going into neutral instead of second!

I find its more of a case of making sure you give it a good firm kick up to make sure it engages properly.

A gently touch of the lever normally gets it in neutral, or thats how I see it.

On most it's how much you move the lever. A soft half click will get neutral and but a hard full movement passes straight though neutral and into 2nd.

On things like Kawasak's with a positive neutral finder it won't go into 2nd gear unless traveling over a certain road speed.
