I'm wondering if anyone can help me out.

I've got my CBT coming up this monday and I've been rooting around trying to find my licence.

Well I found it and it's one of those old green paper ones, which is ok, I'll change it shortly. But, I've been looking at the categories on it and it says I''m licenced to drive: A, E, G, H, J

Will this be enough, does this cover motorbikes?

I've had a look on the back but it doesn't mention motorbikes at all?

Help!!!

Cheers,

Richie.

Should be OK, as far as I know A is the category for your motorcycle entitlement.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've already done my CBT about 16 years ago so I would've thought it would've been picked up then had my licence not covered me.

I'll be starting from new on monday like, because the first time I did my CBT was the one and only time I've ever been on a bike. Never been on one since for some reason Confused

Hope I pass because I'm in the process of buying a bike and it'll be delivered in the next week or so.

Cheers,

Richie.

Yes, if you have A as a provisional entitlement then you're fine.

Currently if you have provisional entitlement to categories A (motorcycle) or P (moped), you'll be able to do your CBT.

I am assuming it is a provisional licence and not one of the really old full licences (which were green and had different codes on them)? Mind you, even if it was, this would mean it was a full car licence which automatically gave you provisional bikes and full moped when they were issued.

Either way, no worries.

Err, there was not such thing as CBT 16 years ago. Do you mean the old part 1 test?

All the best

Thanks again.

It is an old green provisional licence, I've never passed any kind of car/bike/whatever test.

Never been the slightest bit interested in cars. My 7 year old son knows more about them than me.

I'm new to all this. Plus, I've been lurking for weeks, reading just about every post trying to learn.

Done a lot of research on interweb recently deciding which bike to get. Gave myself a budget of £1500 and pretty much realised I wouldn't be able to buy new, but, after a bit sniffing about I'm buying a black YBR125, 2005, zero miles on the clock, not even registered yet for £1490, which is about £500 cheaper than I've seen them elsewhere. Hope to have it next week. Smile

Hi

Only thing to check then is whether that provisional entitlement still is OK. At that time (16 years ago) there was no CBT, and you had 2 years on a provisional to get a full licence. If you didn't pass your test within 2 years you got a 1 year ban from riding a motorcycle.

Thing is I am not sure whether you needed to reapply for a provisional after that 1 year ban was up, and what the state of play is with it now.

All the best

Keith

Maybe it was 15 years ago then, not sure. About 1990-ish. I remember I spent half a day driving round little cones, then I got 'wired' up and went out with one of the instructors following me telling me which way to go, did a hill start as well I think?

Well I'm back from my CBT, about 7½ hours early.

It appears my licence didn't have the required category on after all. Apparently, when I did my CBT the first time around the licence was good enough, but the licences/categories have changed since then, so my old green licence no longer allows me to ride motorbikes.

They said I could do it on a twist n go which would then allow me to ride a geared motorbike, but I turned it down as it's not really much use to me not having any gears and all.

Apparently there are 2 types of old paper licence and mine was the wrong one. Now I have to send off for the right licence, which will probably take about 3 weeks then book it again.

So, what is the Letter that goes with the motorbike when you pass?

I havent got mine back from the DVLA yet, want to make sure they haven't messed it up or anything.

If you've done an A2 test, then you'll get an A2 on the back.

If you've done a DAS course, then you'll get an A.

No. It'll come back with A on it regardless of what test you've taken.

Only difference is that the A2 test pass will come back with a ≤25kw on it.

According to the DVLA website it'll cost me £19.00 to change my useless paper licence to a photo one. I'll change my address whilst I'm on, which is free.

Apparently the form I need is a D1, does anyone know offhand if this form has a part where I can 'add on' the motorcycle entitlement that I'm missing? I would hate to wait about 3 weeks for my new licence to come through only to find out that I still can't ride a bike. Now that would be sickening.

The way it stands at the minute, I should receive delivery of my bike within the next week and not be able to ride it for about another 1 or 2, depending on how long the licence takes to sort out Sad

But I could sit on it, and pretend I'm riding it Smile

But there again, I AM 35 years old, and it may look a little odd to the neighbours Laughing

They say that, but if you have your address changed at the same time, and pay the small fee for the post office to check it, I find that the post office bods say that it's free to change address. Unfortunately it's impossible for the DVLA to issue you a new paper only licence. Since the post office collect the fee at the same time and stamp your paperwork/fee as all OK, you get your new photocard licence from the DVLA much cheaper.

I've changed three old paper licences (me and others in family) for new plastic ones in this fashion at the post office (changing address at the same time) and each time have paid only the small post office "checking" fee.

And I think all provisional licences come with provisional car AND bike these days automatically.
