Hi, all i'm after is some advice on whether this is a good idea or not......
I'm 20 years old (just) driving for 2 years, getting a CB Hornet when i'm 21, but before I do that I'm going to get a Honda CB125 (laugh if u want!) for about a year, then take my full test on a bigger bike when I'm 21. Does this sound like a good idea??
I'm starting the Ron Haslam race school using a Hornet this year aswell, so it will not be a big jump from a 125 to a 600 bike on the road!

If you've got the cash then yes it's a good idea, but have you raced before??? You might find starting at Ron Haslam a bit difficult if you've never been on a track before, or actually had a powerful road bike.

yeah i've done two track days before!
Cheers!!
(the reason i'm not going for a two stroke is all down to money - no point, why waste all that money now when i'm getting a 600 when i hit 21)

You can get a cheap NS125 for £500 - £1000, this'll probably be better practice for a hornet as it should have just under twice the power of a CB (about 18-20), though I think some CB did have about 14/15. Had you considered a cg?.. IMHO they handle a bit better than the cb.

sorry, i was meant to say the CG, not the CB.
(can't stand 2-strokes, sound shit)
+ insurance, to insure the CG it's £390 TPFT / NSR etc. is £980 TPFT - cheapest quotes!!

I take it that these are for new bikes?

...since you know that you're gonna be getting a bigger bike very soon, then it's not really worth getting a new CG...you can pick up "decent" second hand ones for about £500 ...and insurance should only be a few quid...well, almost...

Why not get a honda hornet cb250, theyre 4 cylinder with around 30-40bhp and can pick a good one for around £2500, so do ur restricted licence test and ride that then do the other test to ride any bike when u turn 21.

Go for a second hand bike I've got an RK 91 and it's 400 tpo (I was 18 but had no no claims etc) and I'm riding it on L's. I paid £400, but have been spending more and more on it to make it more beautiful/faster etc, but as it was it was road legal and pretty quick (I think the restrictor must have 'fallen' out.)

I'm getting a second hand bike, its about £600 (CG125), thoughs quotes are for the second hand bikes - its because the area i live in! £450 TPFT, no no-claims, age 20, for an N-reg bike (had CBT for two years- still on CBT, and been driving for 3 years).
cheers!

Do you need TPFT for a £600 cg? To start with it's not likley to get nicked and when you add the excess to the extra you're paying above TPO it'll probablly come out somewhere near the £600 you're paying for the bike.

While I appreciate some people are bothered by the sound a bike makes consider a 500GP bike, they sound pretty shit but (Up until this year anyway) they are pretty much the 'ultimate' bike evolution... Also F1 cars etc. don't exactly have a 'nice' sound, in general engines that produce high power for their engine size will sound high pitched and tinny.

A big chain? Should cost £50-£100 for a decent one and you can take it to your next bike. If you add on the extra your next insurance will cost it could well come to more than the cost of the bike if it gets nicked.

there's a chain you can get from https://www.motrax.co.uk for 40 quid and you get a free chain bag that fits on the pillion seat so you've no excuses to forget it either.
