Hi there, im wondering if its worth getting an alarm system with immobiliser?

I would do it meself with one off ebay, so like £25 for a full alarm system.

But im wondering is it worth it?

Im getting quotes of about £270 TPO for insurance, would an alarm bring this down at all?

Or would a good disc lock and chain be as good and possibly bring insurance down any more?

I would get a disc lock and chain anyway, but could invest another £25 odd....squid into the chain and lock ... ?

Over night it will be in my driveway, in my little village with the larger sum of about 5 or six houses and the odd polish bloke walking past to a close industrial estate. During the day, it would most likely be at college, parked outside.

So just wondering if its worth it?

Thanks.

Things only bring down insurance if the company that makes them has deals with the insurance, and are properly fitted, so a cheapie off eBay will not bring down your premium. The best it will do is stop people stealing it, or sitting on it.

I use a disc lock everywhere I go, even if the bike is parked up outside a friends in a nice neighbourhood I still will, I don't want my baby stolen. Outside school usually use my padlock and chain, disclock and steering lock, remember the physical presence of it being there is enough to deter some of the softcore thieves.

Expensive, professionally fitted alarms bring your insurance down a little, but the saving is generally far less than the cost of the alarm.

A cheapy from ebay is grand if you just want something to make a noise when someone touches your bike.

yes and no , yes to reduce your insurance by pennies , no cus they drain your battery and nobody pays any attention to alarms these days anyway.

cant forsee an alarm being of any benefit on a TPO policy as that will only cover you if you hit someone (i.e the 3rd party) and an alarm wont stop that from happening.

IF it was a TPFT (fire and thieft) quote it would begin to make some difference provided it is a professionally installed and industry recognised alarm.

Hope that helps

Phil

While all the posts above are informative an Alarm at the end of the day will give you some piece of mind, and if you are local to the bike( I.E in a house for a few minutes ) at least you'll hear anyone tampering with it.....

alarms are ok if your battery is good, put one on a bike with a weak battery and you will get fed up of bumping it every morning.

A cat1 Thatchman approved alarm would reduce my insurance by £5 a year. Shocked

i just brought one off ebay n fitted it tonight, i only got it as deterant cos i always use alarmed disk lock and steering lock but it is something so if theives see me pull up lock it AND set and alarm may stop them, but no amount of safe guarding will prevent someone nicking it if they really want it.....

I fitted an alarm, only use it when the bike is outside my house, so if anyone touches my baby I'll be out there like a shot to sort them out.

Haven't told the insurance company cause I doubt it would make a difference.

I do sleep easier at night though Very Happy

i bought a talking alarm immobiliser off ebay for £28. didn't lower the insurance quote i got.
tbh it's there for peace of mind for me, and in some ways does have the visual deterrant as there's a little LED on the back of the bike that blinks on and off. i also wanted an alarm, as everyone must know how cumbersome it can be to take out the big chain and padlock everywhere, and be arsed to put it on take it off. where as with the alarm, it's just a button and it's locked or unlocked.

also, it's fairly damn sensitive. had the alarm set, and put the chain through the back wheel thinking it wouldn't do anything, and it started telling to get away Razz and my sisters friends wanted to know what it sounded like whilst i was out, so they started smacking the seat, big mistake Laughing

go for it Thumbs Up

my main reason would not be to lower the insurance, but how well it works, how loud it is and if it has pressure sensors, mecury switches ect.

i want it loud so it wakes me up fast so i can get outside with the shotgun.

again, youl spend more on the alarm than it does lower the insurance, get one for personal reassurance.

Steve.
