Hay all, im fairly new to all this, hense the questions ive put about, but how would you all feel if i put a website together containing as much info as possible about lisencin, repair work, troubleshooting etc ... just as much info crammed into one site as possible to help anyone who needs it. I designs and build em, so would be built as if you were a customer etc ...

Also, would people be willing to donate info/guides/anything else that could help.

Could be like a reference as im guessing alot of the same questions get asked, so if the site was referenced, then people might find the info they need on that before repeating an asked question.

Just an idea, if i can have your thoughts.

Thanks,

Luke.

**EDIT**

Perhaps if there are any fellow web builders, you could help to maintain it, n update it etc ...

Thanks Thumbs Up

So lets put that into techy speak:

You want to create an SQL database, created and maintained by you (with guidance from others) where users can read and submit new articles for you to check before entering them into the database.

The articles would be then of course split into subsections like licencing (spelt ??), workshop etc. These articles could then be searched by keywords or viewed by catagory. It would also be nice to be able to add pictures and format the text much like the PHPBB code these messages are recorded in.

This would make a great Alevel/degree coursework project, but I hate to say it has probably been done before and could I also point to this on this forum and the Search tool:

No, wouldnt be a SQL database and users wouldnt be able to post things.

It would be a separate website, were article can be sent to me or other with FTP access, who can update the site with there info, so that it can be checked, so nothing stupid can go up etc.

It wouldnt be part of the forum either, it would be linked to here as a main place to go, and i would make up some graphic ads for here, on the site.

It would be a free standing website.

Somehow, just from your writing i can consider you not liking the idea.

I'd designs it as a separate website mainly, with tech artciles, help advice, live chat, everytihng linked to this forum.

No i think it is a great idea. Its just that I feel that may have already been done to some degree, however these are often rubbish attempts with no real design or technical nohow, and has just been copied out of a textbook and one or two images from Google of R1s.

Its all in the design and functionality. PHPBB forums are used a lot due to the large amount of functions available, they are also well designed and easy to use.

Trust me, the database is the easiest way to go, as you can proofread stuff before it is entered onto the main site. You will be perfectly able to bin crappy articles but still entering the better ones onto the site.

The most common language is PHP to communicate with a SQL database, however for all language that isnt in "<php" and "?>" brackets (is that the right word) the code is the same as html.

You could create it in a fraction of the tine with a database and a few good written pages, and its easier to keep uptodate. Tkae this forum for example, it has an administrator who doesnt do much and a team of moderators to delete crappy messages, but after that it is fairly automatic.

I know databases are easy to keep up-to-date etc, i just dont know enought yet to do one, lol ...

Every site so far has been HTML mainly, with the odd bit of JAVA, CSS Styling.

If there are any hp experts who can help me along, would be appreciated, lol Rolling Eyes

If not, im quite happy to do it in HTML and keep it up to date meself, just ad the new info and upload the new age really using the same name. It gets harder to update if its got pics etc, but hay ... if there's no php experts, then ill have to go ahead with HTML, if i can get lots of info to put on Razz

Thumbs Up

Look here, this is where I learnt it all (sort of), anyway it is a good place to start:

https://www.php-mysql-tutorial.com/

I am no PHP genius, I can create and alter queries, as well as storing variables and sending variables on the page, but that is about it.

You might get away with just setting up and moderating an access-restricted wiki (e.g. mediawiki). Would make collaboration a bit easier and avoids constantly up- and downloading the stuff Wink.

Sounds like a good idea, though.

Agreed, a wiki is probably the way to go. Grab mediawiki and set it up, pretty easy really Smile

Obviously you can then customise it as you see fit.

Perfect for this kind of thing.

You mean like this page?

Don't quite see who you're offering to make a website for. Confused

Think content rather than how it'll technically work.

If one person was to do a good site for newbie bikers, and it was enough of a passion that they'd maintain and update it, it would be a good thing.

But if you're looking for people to submit the stuff, to link to stuff from other sites, it'll end up sucking. It needs to be the cohesive effort of one person, in my opinion.

So anyone can submit info and there'll be no process to see if it's actually correct or not?

That is where the idea falls over. There are already lots of sites on the internet offering crap information, the point would be to create one offering good information. If you don't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of your subject then are you the person to build it?

(goes for any factual site, not just this particular idea)

If you want to do it, learn the subject first.

personally I think its a good idea, it would be handy to have a site dedicated to new riders, I know there are sections of this forum avaliable but I dont feel they go into enough detail, also guides to certain skills/atributes of biking could go on such a site (with pictures?)

i think it sounds cool Thumbs Up
