Hello

I am looking for a set of radios, with headsets for helmets, which will allow me and my dad (and maybe anyone else who I ride with) to talk and communicate on our days out.

Does anybody have such things on here, or know of any shops where I can buy a set.

There are loads on ebay, but they are mostly in the USA, and I dont really fancy ordering something electrical from there just in case I cant plug them in etc.

Any info mucho appreciated

Ash

Go and ask your bike instructor what he uses?

The one I had in my ear on the lessons, test etc where very good, but i think it was just short wave radio with a headset.

Basically the cheaper it is, the slower you have to go to be able to use it, as some block noise better than others. Go to the bike shop and try some out ?

Dont get it from fleabay.

Most test centres use a simple walkie-talkie (usually quite inexpensive) and just buy an aftermarket hands-free kit (also inexpensive), voice activated... Simple.

I've also seen these cool devices called 'Autocom' systems which act as a hub for your CB (walkie-talkie), mobile phone, even your mp3 player. I'm sure you can get them in th UK. I want one myself. Smile

There are alot of PMR446 radios available these days, these are the 446Mhz 500mW licence free radios. They come in at anywhere from £15? per pair to £150?+ for a single radio.

Even between the cheapest and most expensive they are all much of a muchness. The expensive radios tend to be more upto the spec of some of the licenced radios in build quality and features, but the transmit range will be pretty much identical to the £15 cheapies due to the legal limit in power.

The advantage of the more expensive ones for bike use is they may have better VOX (voice activation), I guess this is quite critical in a noisey inviroment like on a bike.

Rushed reply from work, I will try and help a bit more later if required.

Remember, you pay for what you get.

If your looking for a cheap set, then be prepared to be dissapointed Thumbs Up

I would definately say go for a starcom or autocom... something along those lines. I managed to get one on ebay with a rider and pillion headset and cables for £40 delivered Thumbs Up

Radios are ten a penny and i just plug a cheapo £8 one from halfords into the autocom!

The thing with cheap set ups, is that the microphones are normally crap, and as a result they pick up engine noise and idle, and wind noise. This means that when your riding, you are constantly transmitting which either means that the other person cannot talk, or means that you are both constantly hearing the other persons unwanted noise through your headsets.

This can be fixed by fitting a push to talk button - but it still means when you go to transmit, the mic picks up all the wind and that and its impossible to hear what they are saying.

Defo a vote for autocom here... its crystal clear at over 90mph Thumbs Up (And thats for the Easi-Com), one of the lower model sets.

Autocoms are top class, starcom are a bunch of jokers, but my pillion to rider setup works pretty clearly just using a helmet skirt and a foam covered end on the mic.

Also an autocom fan. Got a 'military spec' radio and to be honest thats what lets the system down.

Don't get me wrong, it works, but you pick up all sorts of noise on the radio (lorry drivers/drive thru orders etc). The transmit distance isn't anywhere near what they advertise either. Regardless, i'd still recomend them.

The autocom box as a seperate is excellent. You can really tell the difference talking rider to pillion over rider to rider. Comms is clear and instantanous at.....well i've had it over 160 and could hear her screaming fine! Laughing

I've got an Autocom pro7 and Easi7 intercoms on the 'ace and the FJR, I've added kenwood PMR digital radios to them so I can talk to my mate who has a similar setup.

Looking at about £300 all in for the full kit tho.

lol, we have finally got a set that works together lol.

we got some "Tru Talk" Headsets that were recomended to us we got them from the BMF show for £25 each. Im sure you must be able to buy them on the net but not sure where. then we went through 3 sets of radios and various adapters before we found a set that worked Evil or Very Mad we ended up getting a set of radio's called "Freequency" from Maplins £40 they came as a pair with chargers.

the headsets plug straight in to an MP3 player when your not out with anyone too Thumbs Up

Thats what i've got, but maplins also do a helmet adapter kit for about £20 to plug into the radio.

Works okay up to about 80/90, as long as the volume isnt turned up too much - the sound gets a bit harsh then, and distorts too much. Turn it down a bit though, and jobs a good un.

I bought a pair of Alan 441 with chargers for £35 off an ebay shop, and the headsets are around £10-£20 each depending on what you want. Having tested them yesterday, make sure you get a push-to-talk system, otherwise the wind noise keep the channel open, and the other person wont be able to talk to you.

yeah our headsets have a push to talk, so I just turned the VOX off and seems to work fine. the thing I like about our headsets is they have two speakers. all the others we looked at only had one.

I need to replace the headset I bought as the talk button is on the mic. Looking at the MHS300 from Alan ~£20. They come with two speakers also.
