Hi,

Why is it that 2t engines need to be rebuilt every now and again? Also, at what point would a rebuild be due?

Thanks

Hi

Any engine needs rebuild occasionally.

2 strokes suffer more because they have a worse lubrication system (crank bearings) and have dirty great holes in the bore (increases wear on the pistons and rings).

All the best

Keith

Thanks

I'll be buying a used one soon so are there any tell tale signs to look out for that might indicate a rebuild is needed?

Hi

Whine from the bottom end for the main bearings. Piston slap for the top end (or do a compression check).

The older lower powered 2 strokes (TZR125 / 250, RD350YPVS, etc) are far less prone to needing rebuilds often, until someone decides to tune the nuts off them.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Wait for it. The speaking the obvious answer. A compression tester.

Basically a gauge that connects up to the spark plug hole and you crank the engine over, with the gauge recording the compression.

All the best

Keith

You replace the spark plug with the compression tester then kick / spin the engine over, the tester has a guage on it that will show you the psi achieved. Thumbs Up

So going on that theory then,

Is there a table or a guide on what to look for once the readings from the compression tester have been attained?

the lower the compression, a rebuild probably needs done?

Hmmm.

When i bought my bike, the chap said it not long had its 8k rebuild, probably be worth buying a little tester and seeing what the reading is, just to see if he was fibbing or not.

it might be worth posting in the regional section on here, to find out if someone in your area has a compression tester

or see if there is someone near you on www.125ccsportsbikes.com

people who have a compression tester, dont get to use them very often, and love to get the chance to use it Smile
