CRT Dead?

i notice the latest range of graphics card, nVidia 7900 series and ATI's X1900 dont seem to have a blue VGA port on the backplate of the card

i'm sure there is a reason for this, but for a lot of people surely its going to mean in order to get a new graphics card they are being forced to go out and buy shiny new digital TFT monitors?

is CRT finally dead?

Only if you don't use a D/A adapter...

Negative - all decent graphics cards come with dvi > dsub converter

for use with crt monitors - i have 2 sli graphics cards, both have 2 dvi connectorys so i have 4 dvi > dsub converters Very Happy... one in use as there's quite a few tft's that only have analog connectors.

I would think CRT's will be around for a while yet, IMO they have a much better picture than there TFT counterparts, although my 19" is fucking huge, takes up most of the space on my desk. The only reason I'd get a TFT would be for space saving purposes, but I dont think they justify the money you need to spend to get a decent one.

i did have a huge 21" CRT that i got cheap off ebay, but now i have a tft. I thought the pic quality wdnt be as good on the tft, but its better.

I resisted tft for ages but it rules. Also remember that a 21" crt has a viewable pic size of about 19", whereas a tft19" monitor has a viewable size of 19". Probably the best £200 I ever spent. Especially as my monitor is in my living room next to my sofa.

CRTs (most that is) are already higher res than HD so yeah although they're not designed for that sort of use.

i have a feeling that HD boxes have the same output as an anlogue pc monitor, so i reckon you may be able to use a HD tv tuner with a CRT monitor that has high enough resolution. I doubt its more than 1280 1024.

That's what I used to think...

My beloved and long lived Iiyama CRT died last month, so I set about looking for a replacment. I ended up with one of these and now love it. The colours are crisp, there's no ghosting or any other rubbish I had been warned about and rather than taking up most of my desk and weighing a ton (56kg for my old 22" CRT) it sits neatly at the back. Add to that the fact that it won't be pumping out masses of heat in summer, and doesn't emit any radiation and I'm sold.

I work in a building filled with professional graphics artists and Quark/inDesign people, and the only ones still using CRT monitors are those that are waiting for their upgrade budgets to come through. These guys get to choose their own equipment, and almost all now go for LCDs.

At my work we only replace monitors when they brake, so looks like we'll have crt for a while.

However i've got a good 17" TFT at home and a 19" Iyama CRT,
i'm not fussed between them.

The colours are better on the CRT though.
