PostPosted: 21:59 - 06 Jun 2006    Post subject: My first crash Reply with quote

HI

Today me and my 50cc peugeot jet force TDSI went through something id rather not repeat in a hurry.

I was leaving school from my exam like i do everyday leaving school. Till about a mile down the road, doing 30mph (yes its restricted at that) i saw a black audi, he looked right (towards me) and then left. I thought he had seen me. i was aproaching the junction he was leaving when his wheels moved. I sounded my horn to try and catch his attention and started to break. He carried on coming out but he came out REALLY quick. It was to late i hit the front right corner of his car.

Luckily i sort of jumped off when it hit so i landed on my feet (lossing my shoe at the time) but the bike came off alot worse. Broken sterring , Water cooling was broken, the front was all cracked and the side where it had fallen was scrathed.

I loved that little bike and i was really unhappy to see it like that. I felt all shaken it was all over so quick. Although the driver said it was his mistake and his insurance will sort ETC, but i keep thinking why me i never do anything wrong on the roads, i obey the laws and want to be a keen rider when im older and ive only been driving it for 7months Sad

Id basicly want some sensible advise on what to do next and the whole situation?

thanks
matt

That's just the problem. It's not so much how good a rider you are - it's how bad the other road users can be.

Best piece of advice I can give you, from countless near misses in over 3 years of biking, is to treat every other road user as a complete idiot. Approaching a junction - position yourself defensively in case they pull out, have your fingers ready to brake or sound the horn. Never, I repeat, never assume they have seen you.

Well first things first - get your claim in and verify all the details to the police A.S.A.P.

After that , sit down and take it all in - most of us have had some kind of accident and we have to put it behind us and get on with it .

Yes, you might obey the road laws and are careful but other road users are not , time after time you hear about cars pulling out on bikes , it's just one of those things mate - unfortunatley for you , you got it first hand.

Main point is your safe !
That's what matters - don't let it put you off - what doesn't kill you only makes you more aware on the road Laughing

Good luck getting it sorted

my dad spoke to a local policeman next door (traffic cop) and he said you only have to report if someone got hurt (and i wasnt hurt just shaken). But when it happened the person who knocked me off stayed with me till my dad arrived, he talked to him they agreed with each other and they traded details.

Were just waiting for my local bike shop to give me quote on the repairs!

Well from what i lwas told - if you don't report it you can't claim through the insurance .
I was also told it is illegal not to report an RTA ( road traffic accident )

But that's just what i was told - doesn't mean it's right .

Best of luck anyway

Doesn't look like it mate.

I find it interesting that the police consider hitting a dog as a traffic accident, but not a cat Wink

Remember to claim for a new helmet as well as a new bike. And any other accessories that were damaged (new shoe perhaps Very Happy )

You are also entitled to replacement transport at the driver's cost (from what you say, it seems fairly obvious that it was his fault).

Should be able to help, even if your insurance company doesn't.

Ye def treat all other drivers as out to get you and always assume they haven't seen you or are about to do something stupid.

I've had some, one specifically that springs to mind that HAD seen me and was so panicked at seeing a bike in his rear mirror that he swerved over to the right out of my way, and slammed the brakes on in the middle of a dual carriageway in moving traffic, not knowing what the heck he was going to do next i stopped, he just sat there and wouldn't move until I'd gone past lol

As for accidents I had one in my car, old guy went up the back of me at a roundabout, we swapped details (address name phone etc) and he seemed ok, got a quote but then he decided it didn't happen, phoned him, went around but he was having non of it.

If I ever have a crash again, I'm not moving anything or going anywhere until I have the police there and have a log number. no matter what it takes !

Try not to let it shake you up too much. You are obviously a careful rider, but as someone has already said its the other wankers on the road. Coming off your bike will make you more aware and give you experience. As soon as the bike is fixed get straight back on it Thumbs Up I have come off 4 times and it has never put me off my bike Laughing

Although I do not have my bike or even a license I have been in a few crashes. What is it with crashes outside school? All my mates have peds and two have been crashed into by no less than the teaching staff. A few years ago a maths teacher was drunk on a friday night and backed into a students Suzuki Katana and had to fork out for a new one. It is true, the school run really is dangerous.

Unlucky mate, your lucky he admitted to it all though, i havent been on the road long either but all i can really advise is just when aproaching any sort of junction, slow down slightly just in case, i do it all the time, my mates take the piss, but hey there the ones who will be sorry.

I would suggest that you ring the local nick to check whether you have to report, your neighbour is correct in saying that you only have to report if someone is injured, but at least yoiu have it on record that you spoke to someone if anything happens later.

Make sure your insurance is aware that the other driver admitted fault at the scene as the other driver/insurance company might change their mind when the insurance people get involved.

Glad you're OK and just think - new bike!

Well i went to see my bike today at the workshop to get a quote for the bike and its gonna cost £900 (£1000 went plus labour and vat) to get repaired. The biggest part to buy is a sterring column which will cost about £300 and all the bearings in the colomn. It also need new panels, exhaust cover, mirrors and some few minor parts. Kinds of adds up.

The crash happened about a mile from school by a trading estate.

I normally watch there wheels and if they move i beep my horn to grab there attention and start breaking. But still with the horn and breaks on when i hit him he still failed to hear or see me coming!

I cant wait to get back on the road but i think ill be a bit nervous at first.

Unlucky about the crash, car drivers just dont concentrate on the road. I wouldn’t bother beeping, scooter horns are so quiet they are unlikely to hear you, as you discovered. Just concentrate on braking and getting out their way.

At least the guy sounds decent enough in admitting his mistake and staying with you. Just a shame he didn't look in the first place.

heading from Buckingham to Milton Keynes yesterday there was a BMW driver talking away on his mobile, doing 40 in the 60, turning without indicating etc.

I was behind him looking for a way past and he floored it as I was pulling past him and I had to back off sharpish as my window of opportuninty to get past was closed and I was risking a head on (with an ambulance of all things).

I dropped back and decided discretion was the better course of action. The nutter was still yabbering away on the phone as I filtered past him 15 miles later. I guess the embarrasment of being overtaken by me would have interrupted his phone call... Wink

Mind you, a Ninja nipped past both of us through a gap I didn't even realise existed.. Smile

BMW stopped putting indicators on their cars a few years back I think, seeing as no-one used them anyway. Confused

I think the owner manual states: "Please show which direction you are likely to erratically swerve in to other road users by holding up your mobile phone to the corresponding ear. Or, don't give a stuff about them as you have a BMW and they don't..."

Smile

Not quite true. They just moved them to the options list along with stuff like radio, wipers, steering wheel, wheels, tyres, etc.
