It's in the correct place. It is not in anyones face. You come into this section for biking news, you get it.

So why bother post that? Why?

Portsmouth - Doesn't sparks live there? Or is that plymouth...Thinking

Unfortunately if accidents DO go down, I can see this happening all over the country by other councils who want such low accident figures. So you know what that means people..................... time to start mowing people down in Portsmouth. Laughing Sorry, bad taste!

Hi,

Simon among many things I do the law of the land is something important to me and I do keep and eye on such things, for after all The price of freedom is eternal vigilance . Where I think someone on BCF may be interested I post it here.

However I rarely post any links about cake decorating (and never in biking news) as that would be a little off topic. You may see a theme, on Bike chat forums there will be a bias towards bikes and related activities.

I think it is quite sad you have nothing to add to a discussion that is of any merit. Of course your threads such as 'who would you send to the moon' are real valuable asset Rolling Eyes .

They are quite obvious. Too many poeple getting their income from stamping down on motorists whenever they can.

See this old Safe Speed press release. https://www.safespeed.org.uk/pr116.html . Seems that accident severity is worse in 20mph limits.

Likely to be expensive to install as 20 limits may only be installed in zones which are meant to be pretty much self enforcing (so loads of traffic calming). Without that they are probably not legally enforceable.

Quite rightly so. What a stupid comment? if you had a brain you would realise how it affects you, and why people are telling you about these issues. Lucky that some of us give a toss.

it says every residential road, that seems to me like only places that are just housing will be 20 zones. So areas like town centers, connecting routes in towns would still remain 30 by that logic?

even if they were lowered they would be ignored, the new housing estate near me is a 10/20 zone, everyone treats it as a 30.

Hi

From the BBC web site:-

Every road in Portsmouth will be covered by the new blanket Traffic Regulation Order apart from London Road, Northern Parade, Mile End Road, Eastern Road and the seafront.

That is far from just residential areas.

And adding traffic calming for the 20 limits will severly delay the emergency services. In London the traffic calming is acknowledged to cause far more deaths by the delays to the emergency services than could ever be saved on the roads.

God when will it end!
I'd rather the £250,000 be spent on educating kids on how to cross the bleeding road!!
If I am not mistaken we have probably the safest roads in the world but somehow a large number of kids getting run over? (Correct me if I am wrong).
So we concentrate on ...........traffic speed.

From what I remember of Portsmouth there's not much opportunity to do over 20 anyway.... What a pointless exercise!

That's awful!

I find it hard enough to concentrate in a 30mph limit... The CG is quite hard to keep at 30 so I feel sorry for everyone with big sportsbikes as it must be hell!

Simon: WTF at flaming Mr/Mrs Kickstart? They take time out of their day to alert people to things that are of concern to us, and are fine upstanding members of this board...

I know who I'd rather have on the forum.

I'm just glad I live 15 minutes up the road and don't have to go into the city too often.

I was about to say it might not be that bad as central Portsmouth is really not a very big place, but then I saw the BBC's article which makes it clear just how wide an area it is covering...

They really will not stop until nobody dies ever, will they?

Edit:

Oh and this is unrelated but on a similar note: The local park which was built a few years back is soon going to have those 'antichav' things which produce an annoying noise that only teenagers can hear. So basically we live somewhere where there is fuck all for any of the kids to go other than the park and they will soon be essentially banned from going there too. My sister's already been stopped and had her details taken by the police for just sitting in a park with her mates because 'it's a known anti-social behaviour area'. It's as if they think anyone from the age of 13-18 just should not exist. OTT rant yes, but it pisses me off. Razz

Are you sure it wouldn't be better to employ people to carry a green flag and walk in front of vehicles?

As for reducing accidents then that's a nice aim. However, if this article (click link) can be believed

20mph limits? Shocked Absolute joke! I ride faster in 20s than i do in 30s, just so people who hear my exhaust wailing get a taste of how annoyed i am. Sorry to the residents of rainford and billinge for the noise, but at 20mph i can stop in a stupidly short distance. 30mph is already slow, but 20? that's just taking the piss!

Just because it says 20 doesn't mean you have to do 20.

I suppose if all signs are enforced by "safety cameras" then you are quite possibly screwed but i don't see many people sticking to it.

After all how many people do you see doing 30 in a 30 and 40 in a 40???

Your right, i've followed people doing 45 on a single lane carriage way before and also followed people doing 30-35 in a 40 AND they dont like getting overtaken Neutral

But a 20mph speed limit will be hard to keep to (asuming i do) Rolling Eyes

If they make it a 20 its because the level of accidents (usually kids) has risen or usually more than a couple of people have died!!! Exclamation

Me. I get pissed off with the boy racers who speed through a residential area at stupid speeds when my kids are playing out, had to offer to set fire to a young chaps car if he did not slow down next time. He got the message. Now I live in a small village and I would get upset with speed merchants, so I go by the rule of treating others as I would expect to be treated. So I don't speed in 30's 40's or 50's. NSL I may do 90ish but have had too many close calls with my licence.

Also, when slowing down to a 40 limit near me on the edges of a residential area, two middle aged women in their nice toyota saloon car overtook me and looked as if to say, "What are you going so slow for"?

So, I feel the answer lies with better education for drivers.
Or maybe people should have more respect for the rules and not be so selfish. Which of these would you apply to our toyota driver?

As Bella me mentioned, it's pretty hard to go over 20 mph in Pompey city centre (and the areas round it) as it is...

From personal experience is more a problem of un-educated kids crossed the road in a dangerous manner, coupled with parents that couldn't care less where there kids where...

Hi,

And they have just finished some trials of specs cameras that dont have to be cabled in pairs (they are wirless and use syncronised clocks) so they can have several of them to look at avaerage speed. Apparently ideal for 20 limits.

Also the area they plan to cover in portsmouth is huge not just the city center.
