Lights Manouvere ???

One thing i picked up as a minor on my test was turning right at traffic lights as a van was waiting opposite to turn tight also .

I have drawn a poor diagram of it - the small white blob is me , large is the van , the arrows are the route we would have to take and the black cross is where i was and i'm sure i should have been to turn right .

Am i wrong ? if so what is the correct procedure ......

it wasn't a box junction - i just put that in to seperate the road lanes lol - so was i right ?

First off, you are allowed to enter a box junction and wait when turning right.Box Junctions

As for the positioning, it varies from junction to junction. What the highway code says about it

I think the proper thing do do is to be left side to left side so you are turning infront of the vehicle.

DSA say right-side to right-side, so you can see oncoming traffic and so they can see you.

It may be one of those things that's written in the Highway code - but noone actually practises it.

For example, near me there's Hick's Gate roundabout on the way to Bristol. Apparently bikers are supposed to use the bus lane around it, even if turning right. I have never seen anyone on a motorcycle do that there, as quite frankly, it's dangerous. I doubt any car drivers know about that.

Another example: just passed my test, was first in the queue at a large traffic light controlled roundabout. The entire thing is considered a box junction (actually marked, like in your example), and my exit (left) was quite clearly blocked by another traffic queue in my exit road. There was no way I could fit behind the last car at the exit and the yellow box. So lights turn green, and the lorry behind me (wanting to go straight ahead) started on the horn, even though, legally, I couldn't move.

What I'm trying to say is once you've passed your test, you'll come across situations where common sense prevails over the Highway Code, especially when you're a vulnerable motorcyclist.

It's a sticky situation, but the way I understand it there are two ways to turn.

Facing the other car and turning in front of it (This is the least favorable maneuver as it compromises your view of the road directly ahead)

Going round the back of the other car (Better because you have a clear view)

But I think both methods rely on the other driver doing the same as you.

The way I'd handle it would be to indicate right but drive straight forward as if I was taking the forward road, and turn right around the back of the van, but I don't know if this is right.

Only if it's positioned in a way that oncoming traffic won't be able to get through, and still, I'd be wary.
