Winblows XP - can you uninstall updates?

I (rather foolishly) let windows do an automatic update yesterday. It was the genuine advantage update - so now it knows that its a *ahem*, 'product testing' version of XP that I'm running and I'll now get crappy nagging messages until the end of eternity. Or until I buy a genuine copy (which is pretty much the same thing).

So - is there any way to remove this update without re-installing? I can't do a system restore as my last restore point is probably back when I did the original install.

You can't remove this update as far as I know, no.

The exact same thing happened to me, I'm also *ahem* product testing. There's a very very simple way round it, something to do with setting permissions of a file so that XP can't execute it. I did it and it worked perfectly.

It was posted on here not so long ago, have a goosey gander.

At least check your system restore points. The computer should give it a checkpoint every now and then anyway. My laptop hasn't been turned off for more than an hour for the last 3 months and I tend to have a system checkpoint every day.

You can Remove updates.....Just go to Add/Remove programs and remove them from there. Thumbs Up

Plus if it doesn't go there are ways around it. Wink

2. Right click WgaLogon.dll in Windows Explorer and open the Security Tab.
3. Click Advanced button.
4. Uncheck the Inherit box at the bottom.
5. Click the Copy button.
6. Click OK.
7. Go through each listed user/group and remove the “Read & Execute” permission for WgaLogon.dll, leaving the “Read” permission as-is.
8. Click OK to apply the permission changes.
9. Close the file properties dialog.
10. Restart the computer.
11. Turn “Use simple file sharing” on (optional).

That's what I did. Easy peasy.

i can vouch for this. the missus did an update without thinking and ended up with the nags.

i followed the first method and it worked fine.

1. Lauch Windows Task Manager.
2. End wgatray.exe process in Task Manager.
3. Restart Windows XP in Safe Mode.
4. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32.
5. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache.
6. Lauch RegEdit.
7. Browse to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
8. Delete the folder ‘WgaLogon’ and all its contents
9. Reboot Windows XP.

What is this WGA shit and doesn't it breach the data protection act if its intrusive kinda like spyware?

Just glad I don't have to deal with it, being on Mac OS X and all even if I have to use windows I don't use anything later than Windows 2000.

Is your MAC OS legit?

Yes my Mac OS X is totally legit, I bought a retail box only last year, I don't pirate Apple software thanks. Smile
