Overclocking your video card?

Ok so i got a fairly low spec laptop...

It was high spec about 3 years ago now Laughing

Ive heard some people talk about overclocking their video card to make a few games run better...

I dont know if this is possible on a laptop card, or even how to do it etc... so any advice would be great Thumbs Up

However - "Get a new graphics card / comp" is not usefull as i am skint. Unless someone wants to swap my lappy for a hardc0re gaming rig, i aint interested Laughing

So, is there any way?

It may help people if you mention what chipset we are talking about.
Is it onboard gfx? is so what chipset is it? if not then what card is it? etc etc

Its an integrated graphics card on an ACER TravelMate 240 lappy Thumbs Up

Would be nice to get more than 30fps on some of the older games (MOHAA, Rainbow Six) etc Laughing

Anyone here know how i would do it? As that site doesnt seem to have anything for my card...

DONT do it, It will melt. It would be extremely stupid to overclock an onboad gfx card, for all the difference it would make

Are you using the latest drivers for your card?

Pick any game, and tell me the settings you are running.
e.g. resolution, detail levels, and all other effects (shading, HW T&L, etc).

Try disabling shadows, running in 640x480 or 800x600, and with low/medium detail settings. Try turning off all special effects.

Oh and make sure the games you are trying have the latest patches installed. Patches quite often fix video card related problems and increase performance, including support for previously overlooked chipsets.

Also, are you running in Direct 3D? Or is your card set to something else? (Open GL, software rendering, 3DFX, etc).

EDIT: Sorry should have said it's wise to check what the card SHOULD be running in first.

I never had the chance to own a Voodoo card, I went straight from a Matrox G400 to a Geforce 3 Ti 200 128MB (which I'm still on now Embarassed

Don't bother overclocking your laptop it will never be able to run games decently.

I had a laptop 3 years ago and it had an ATI Radeon card and that refused to run Rainbox Six, and that is far better than any intel graphics.

If you do overclock you'll probably end up with a dead laptop!

It will probably overheat in a matter of seconds, especially in this weather.

If you have a desktop though with proper cooling, it can mean the difference between high and very high graphics settings etc and does raise the FPS onsome games, but only ones that your card struggles to run anyway.

If I overclock my x800, I still get 120fps on Half Life 1, but on CS:S it means the difference between about 50FPS -> 70FPS with everything on full.

Dont do it on the laptop

I strongly advise against over-clocking any component in a laptop, they struggle to keep temps low with normal use never mind clocking a gfx card for games. if you were to do it you'd need to provide adequate cooling for it as high temps on clocked hardware will cause system instability and possibly damage it

I've burnt a FX 5950 out by overclocking it. Sad

Now back to my old Geforce Ti 4800se which has been happily running at 4800 speeds for years.
