Not yet, I've only been investing £50 a month for a few months.

The way I see it is, even if I never win, I'm still putting a nice sum of cash away for a rainy day.

I think that's quite a good idea, nice safe place with a chance of winning something, the interest on a normal account is meagre with this sum of money.

Plus I can open this now! Laughing

more to do with the same buttons as lottery , putting money in loses you money not in the normal sense but in the inflationary sense .

And the fact that its a piss cheap way for the government to borrow money to opress us ...... (think about it it gives you 2.3% used to provide prize money the gov can just slink off to ING and get 4.5% or even lend it to a starving african nation at 900% and cream to profits off from the top).

And the problem is where? If they didn't get cash from this then we would have to pay more in taxes.

Better that I lend them the money to prop up their evil regime and oppress me than they steal the money to prop up their evil regime and oppress me.

I have a saving account with my grandpa so does my sister and 2 cousins. We have 5,000 each in northen rock accounts but were aren't supposed to know about it and we aren't being given it until we are 21.

I think thats because most of my family are still living in the old times where 21 is classed as an adult not 18. (anyway i would have spent it on crap if i had it last year, can put it towards a nice audi a3 when i come out of uni) Cool

Don't even think I will do, though it's hard to get a decent job these days without a degree, it's not impossible. I would just use a student loan, I'm not wasting this money.

Rolling Eyes It's his choice, and there's a much more plausible case for not going to uni these days, than there was.

Joe, I think if you're going to save it, premium bonds are a pretty good idea. I won £50 on £50's worth about 4 years ago, bought a CD player. Laughing

If you're going to save it but plan to fritter it away every now and then or make a major purchase in the near future, bang it in a high interest account, and buy something worth having. That said, I'd take £100 or so out of it and put it in your bank account to sit there, doing nothing. It's always good to have a quick £100 in the bank for emergency situations.

Yeah I agree Rookie, no offence anders but I don't really see University as anything more than a dossabout and a waste of money, though in this day and age I am more pressured to attend, as much as I don't want to I have to.

I think I will put alot of it into premium bonds, and then some of it as you say into a high interest account closer to the time, I will be in a job so won't really need it as and when so much so it could be good, and there's always a chance of winning more.

Cheers guys, you've been a great help. Thumbs Up Smile

Whack it in PB's, forget about it. You might win, you might not. The interest paid on high street accounts isn't worth the hassle.

Got £700~ in PB's, it's staying there until I need a deposit on a house.

No, I haven't won, but I haven't lost.

its not good business because such loans are usually written off and the tax payers have to fill the void , and that most of those profits go into the swiss bank accounts of politicians , you really think Blair does his job happily for 188K pa? ,

to Phanny

Use a loan instead of your savings? , thats what your savings are for its for when you need to spend something ,

Unless you intend never to pay back your student loans (I don't mean abscond I mean never earn more than 21K Pa for life since you pay so little back under this amount that effectively you never pay it off and it is written off before you could ever hope to pay it off (40 years).

everybody at uni does cash in hand jobs (some literally too since a couple of women I used to know did escort services to pay their way) , probably cus NL changed the rules that its pay your tax now (even if you have earned less than the PA) , and claim it back later ,

where previously it was earn up to the PA any you earn ontop you pay tax on.

How much you got Joe?

These 'high interest' account and Isa's are pretty shite if you ask me. I imagine the maximum you'll get is 5%. so on a grand of your money, you'll get £50 after a YEAR! Thats a con if I ever saw one!

Firstly, i'd clear any debts,

Sencondly buy something real nice for yourself,

Last but not least, get down the casino!
Those 2p machines are awesome! Laughing

So?

You obviously missed my point. If what the money is spent is so bad, then surely its better that I am able to get it back (by investing in premium bonds) than not (by being taxed more to make up the shortfall).

Personally, bought my 1st car out of mine (a D-reg Peugeot 309)
I had very little money, and apparently even less common sense at the time haha

...and it's taken me waaay too many years to leave the cage behind me and get on to 2 wheels

Another vote for premium bonds. I bought quite a few. With smaller amounts it is a bit hit or miss, with larger amounts it gives quite a good return and is tax free.

You can get your money back at any time but it is a wee bit of a hassle (you request it back and they post out a cash warrant which you then put in the bank. Takes a few days.). I take this as a good thing, enforces planning and discourages 'spur of the moment' purchases.

I worked out that with 10,000 I should come up with a win every other month (usually £50 but I had a £200 recently). So, your thousand pounds should give you a win at least every year. I signed a form that means they take any winnings and buy more premium bonds with them, essentially compounds the 'interest'.

It is a gamble that said, you are gambling the interest. You might own them for ages and have nothing come up. There again, always the chance of the big one.

You can have up to £30,000 in premium bonds.

Nice work with the calculations, with a grand being a guaranteed win (Even if it's £50 it's still as good as high interest accounts with more chance of winning something). I think that is the way to go. I seen the advert earlier and it's the only time I paid any attention Laughing

Dazbo, I was thinking of working for my next vehicle instead so that I can have this to fall back on, it's worth it to know it's there and you feel safe knowing that. Don't know when I'll be getting a car, might do my test just to get the licence etc. but not for a while.

Cheers guys. Karma

Just checked my calculations, I'm a bit out:

24,000 to 1 odds of winning. So with 1,000 bonds, you should win one in 24 draws. My mistake, it's getting late and I'm guilty of excessive rounding.

I had worked out that I should win once every 2.4 draws and rounded it to 2 in my head Embarassed

Remember, you might not win anything at all.

Mistake excused, but any chance is better than none and I'm sure you'll agree. It's a good way to save too.

Thumbs Up I will win the million. Wink

I had £150 from Liverpool Life Insurance when I was 16. I wasted it on new clothes for work. I should have got mashed instead, but I didn't discover soft drugs until I was almost 19. Sad
