Came across this entry on GPS Warehouse and thought I'd share.

Garmin StreetPilot III for around £150.

You get a ruggidised, waterproof, colour GPS with voice output, all the accessories, a bike power lead and a mount for the bike Shocked Very Happy.
Ok, the SPIII may be not the latest but it does work and is ideal for a bike. With the setup supplied it's also easy to transfer over to a car as and when required. The cheapest alternative I could see would be a Garmin Streetpilot i3 for around £120 but I gather that isn't ruggidised, isn't waterproof and would be hard to get a mount for a bike! (no doubt people will now chip in with the GPS bargains they've acquired and all the home made mounting possibilities Rolling Eyes). Obviously I'd have liked a Garmin Quest 2 or Streetpilot 2xxx series unit, but they're 4x to 6x the price of this one.

Anyhow, I've ordered mine. They're expecting a final shipment in a few weeks so these are back ordered. If you're interested I suggest you get in touch with GPS Warehouse (telephone 020 8893 9393). BTW, no, I don't work for them, I just thought it looked a good price.

HTH Thumbs Up

P.S. As always sorry if posted before, I'm sure the post police will let me know Rolling Eyes

they are a nice bit of kit. The problem with them is memory.. the Garmin mapsets are getting bigger, for the same area, with more detail. My mate's got one of those, and he could EITHER fit on the south of england, OR the north of france where we were going, but not both. the Quest and Quest2 have much more memory, and can fit all of the UK and mainland Europe on (iirc)

but your'e right... as an introduction to GPS, it's a cracking unit and a good price/

I believe thats the same one that NB on here has...

Definately a good peice of kit if its the same one!

One problem we found though, out on the road with it was that the screen can become hard to see ecause of sunlight affecting the display... it is adjustable, ut to adjust it - you need to be able to see it first Laughing

I imagine some sort of hostage situation with me on the net, card out, ready to buy, and Bendy bursts through the door going "PUT DOWN THE DAS FUND AND STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER".

Anyway...

Having looked around you could always get a sun shade from Touratech like this (£12 + p&p)...
https://www.touratech.de/shop_uk/media/01-065-0401-0_I_01.JPG

However, I'll try it first before investing in other accessories.

Sounds like one of you might be able to help me then...

I'm looking for some sort of GPS system that I can use not only for navigation but for recording.

I'd like to ride an unplanned route (like a bimble round wales) and have it all stored to download at the end of the day and view.

Would also like to be able to capture information like current speed at each point of the trip, etc.

That possible?

I admit this is only a half answer - but my Garmin eTrex (which was really bought for cycling/walking purposes) records location, speed, altitude for your journey and, in conjunction with MemoryMap software, you can superimpose that info on a map. So presumably these all-singing all-dancing navigation units will do a similar thing...?

From the Streetpilot II manual
Quote:
...The Streetpilot III automatically records a history of your locations in the 'Track Log', creating an electronic 'bread crumb' trail of the path you have traveled. Once the log is full, new track points will replace the oldest track points. The beginning of the track contains the earliest point while the end contains the most recent ones...

From what I gather the tracks can be downloaded from the unit and saved with the MapSource software. I think that allows you to replay a route. I do not think speed information is kept (but I might be wrong on that). The unit does keep track of maximum and average speed (even average speed when not stationary). Obviously you'd need to take a laptop with you to do that (or are you going home at the end of the day?). So, not sure if it'll do everything you want but at least it does some.

No doubt someone who's actuall used a SPIII can confirm. In the past I've used a Garmin GPS V (the old black and white model) and it did have similar functionality, so I'd expect a newer unit to do much the same.

Very Happy looking at the 'manual' for this from the Touratech site it looks like if you can find something that's firm but also bendable then you could make one yourself. Just cut to shape and a few of the stong Velco sticky buttons, or even a sticky Velco strip (say from Halfords or somewhere cheaper!). Technology doesn't get more Heath Robinson than this (see image below) Very Happy Thumbs Up

I got one after kickstart made a similar thread a few weeks ago. Like feef says the memory isnt great, you can only get most of the uk on the supplied card. But you can get other memory cards for not much if you want to go abroad etc. The screen is pretty good in sunlight but you have to adjust it, i forgot to read how to adjust it last time i went out Embarassed
It does record your route supposedly but i'll be damned if i can find how to download it to my pc. It does record average/max speed and mileage etc. For the money i think its great, especially as it comes with all you need to fit it to your bike and in your car. Thumbs Up
Who cares if it hasnt got 3d maps. Wink

It uses garmins own memory cards. And there is a headphone jack 3.5mm so you can plug some in to hear the guidance.

it's physically VERY large.. the 2610 is ideal for cars, but you can't just stick it in your pocket like you can the Streetpilot or Quests.. why do you think it is shown with it's own carry-bag Very Happy
