This summer I'm gonna do my first ever foreign road trip
I've booked up four days off in August, and booked ferry tickets (Dover-Boulogne) so I get four full days in France.
I'm going with an old mate (whom some of you have met) and we've decided on taking a tent and camping for the duration. We've also decided to try to get as far south as we comfortably can; with an agreed limit of 300 mile days and 'interesting' roads.
But now we're stuck. Having never driven over there ourselves and also not knowing how well areas are signposted, we're struggling to plot an intresting route for the first day. We ideally want to book the campsites before we go.
So far we've got:
Day 1:
N1 - Boulogne to Abbeville
D901 to Marseille-en B. (dunno what B stands for, Boulogne?)
D930 to Gournay-en B.
D316 to Evreux
N154 & N12 to Dreux
D928 to Nogent-le Rotrou
D955 to Chateaudun
N10 to Vendome...
Now is this do-able? Anywhere near Vendome to camp? Enough petrol stations around?

Yeah that should be piss for a first day. Better roads towards the East, such as Troyes to Dijon I think though.
France isn't a third world country, there are petrol stations yes
I wouldn't bother booking campsites personally unless there's a specific one you want to go to. Usually they're pretty easy to find, in the past I've just headed towards some greenery on the map and looked for the campsite signs.
On the signposting, you just need to know what town is next on your route, as road numbers aren't given much (if at all) priority on road signs. They're always trying to get you onto autoroutes as well, so stick to the green signs and avoid the blue ones. |
