totally check the cbr out to make sure it's legit. go to meet the seller to look it over if you're considering it.

it may be a bit much, but you're probably gunna get there some day. check out whether it's decent for you, ie insurance Thumbs Up

It's not a massively fast bike, providing you can be sensible with your right hand, you shouldn't have a problem.

Remember they were very much a tourer rather than a sports bike, incredibly so compared to the new one.
I wouldn't consider an old one to be worth that much.

What will be a big shock, I suspect, is the weight - you will get used to it, but it will feel very cumbersome to start with.

To be honest fella, I think you're treading in no mans land and its only a matter of time that you get shot.

Either he's parting with a bag of nails, or yer gonna end up in a wall.

There are so many CBR's out there, that chances are if he's gonna straight swop for a marauder then its shagged. Many of them will be buggered from too many stoppies/wheelies.

If its old, consider the expense of getting it fixed. Wheel bearings are like £100 a pop to replace, £150 for head bearings, about the same for CCT, rectifiers about £100...

If you really really are interested, test ride it across a variety of roads/motorways for at least a good half hour. Ensure you get stuck in traffic.

See how the engine copes - does it over heat? Pop? Bang? Any werid noises from anywhere? Does it start from cold etc?

TBH, I think a litre bike is a bit much. I started on a 600 and for a good few months scared the shit outta me...

Are you aware what CBR he is talking about Confused - haven't seen many owned by the stunt-inclined.

The old CBR1000 should be a lot, lot tamer bike than a modern 600.

Not so sure. The 600 will take more effort to get to speed while the 1000 will do it effortlessly. Which might be a shock when you get to a corner and find the brakes are no good by modern standards (even assuming it is in good condition) and it handles far worse.

All the best

As I said, haven't ridden one, but modern 600s I have; they are very fast Smile. Most will easily wheelie upto the top of first.

Midrange is pretty good these days; looking at a dyno-graphs suggest a modern 600 is only missing a little from the older thou in the midrange.

Seems they've worked gearing out to make quite a difference these days - ie compare a newish 600 to an older blade.

Hi

Rode ones years ago. They are heavy lumps. Softly sprung. And will pull from no revs in any gear without effort.

All the best

G, i agree with what your saying, that an old CBR1000, is nothing like as frisky as the latest sports 600's. It certainely is longer, softer and much much heavier too. This blunts performance, and handling even more so. It will certainely accelerate slower than a racy, short, light 600 will. However the CBR will be far easier to ride in terms of everything being blunted by the weight, and so full throttle through the gears acceleration etc, will be much easier, less skill required and less intimidating. It will also be rock solid and stable at 100mph+, even on poor surfaces. The new 600's would feel very edgy and unstable in comparison.

Basically the old CBR tho will be far slower round a race track, and a little bit slower over the 1/4mile too. But in isolation it's still very fast, and your looking at a 165mph bike, so in simple top speed terms it's not anything like slow! And also it will feel easy and safe to pull away quicky and pin the throttle to the stop through the gears, with rapid acceleration and no drama, or front end lifting going on. Of course the 600 will always accelerate faster if you can use it, and are not intimidated by it, but the CBR will get the power down easier from a standing start, so initial off the lights acceleration may be better, and once out cruising the big beefy midrange will make overtakes easy quick, and not need alot of down changing.

600cc sports bikes, get faster and faster every year, with more power than ever in a big rush at the top of the rev range. Unfortunately this means they are more peaky, and less torquey at the bottom end and midrange, and this makes them less real world faster, and for average road riding, only makes it harder to go faster in real world situations, and so they are getting less and less novice friendly and less useable too!

I only mentioned 600s because chris implied that it would be worse than a 600.

As I said, a newish sports 600 is / can be a very fast bike.
However some can be relatively stable and easy to ride in an 'unscary' manner.

Fact is, when I did my DAS I trained on a GS500. Admittedly not the pokiest bike in the world, but more than enough at the time. Stepping onto the CBR was like someone had put dynamite up my arse. It was an old 97 model with about 10k miles on the clock.

Given that the brakes were also shite (you'd need to book an appointment to stop), having a litre, throttle happy newbie would have resulted in my early death, thats for certain!

At least with the CBR6, after about 3rd gear things did slow down a lot more...less acceleration etc. No such luck with a litre bike!

Yes, there is.

We are talking a late 80s tourer litre bike. Not a 2006 model 165hp stupid-quick bike.

I had a quick look on google and the CBR1000 has very slightly midrange than a newish 600, but quite a lot more weight and about the same top end power.

I expect it would be much 'easier' to ride the CBR1000 slowly than a newish 600.

RD350 - I found mine fairly tame, despite it being known as a 'nutter' bike of it's time.
