Title says it all really.

After a breakdown at Cadwell last week I discovered a small amount of rusty water in my fuel tank. I've drained the tank and carbs and now have 11-12L of contaminated petrol.

As the water settles to the bottom, I was going to syphon off the good stuff from the top, but that will still leave a good 1L to get rid of.

Where do you take it to get rid of it? Does it have the same environmental consequences as tipping oil? Can I pour it away in a remote corner of a field? (I live in a very rural area). I could keep it for starting bonfires etc but to be honest I have never done so before so can't see it being of much use.

I don't recall being able to take it to the tip though.

Cheers.

Mate just pour it onto some concerete or something in the open, that is non flammable and away from anything that is likely to catch and torch it, enjoy the view and take some pics if you can.

I think council run tips, those where you can dump your own rubbish, have to have an oil collection bin. You could try there as I know stuff like used brake fluid gets tipped in with the used oil.

There's a large sign on ours saying nothing other than oil. No petrol, white spirits, coolant, brake fluid, etc.

I would imagine burning 1L of petrol would make rather a large and posibly uncontrollable fire though wouldn't it?

How do you plan on lighting it, if you are late you could singe your hairs.
Just pour dispose of it in a council tip or as stated earlier pour on NON flamable stuff like concrete slabs and allow to evaporate.

The other thing to do is dig a small hole and bury.

I don't know if these are against the law so make sure its ok to do so.

Last time I had dodgy petrol to get rid of, I just lobbed it into the 'dead bit' of the garden.

I've no idea what the previous owners used to kill the tree that used to be there, but not even weeds will grow there now. So a couple of litres of wonky unleaded wasn't going to make it any worse.

Burn it in small quantities, lob it, let it evaporate... it's only a litre, it's not like you've got gallons to get rid of.

As said, if you dont have a large enough space burn it bit by bit, also if there is nothing around to feed the fire petrol on its own should burn off reasonably quickly, just make sure its not next to a wooden shed on a windy day Smile

Depends on how contaminated it is. If it's kinda ok, keep it in a bottle and use it for cleaning. If it isn't keep it in a bottle and use it as a Molotov cocktail Smile

Actually, you can kill two birds with one stone, and use petrol soaked bogroll to wipe your arse with. It'll get rid of those stubborn and difficult to remove stains, and acts as an astringent, should you have piles.

As has been suggested, burn it off bit by bit in a little hole in your garden away from anything else flammable Thumbs Up

A mate and I used to grab a jerry can full of petrol and a couple of squirt bottles. Hit a quiet road and just write/drawer shit on the road and then light it. Can be entertaining, and even more so when said mate is not paying attention and you realise you can spray a a naked flame up the back of his leg. Let the games begin Thumbs Up

Hint: wear long pants and shoes with no laces.

Yeah I know. I have also seen a vid of a firemen putting a cup of petrol on a hot BBQ. The flash was amazing. Certainly explained why he was dressed head to foot in fire proof stuff and used a shield!
Ah while I am in safety mode don't be tempted to put it in the waste oil at the tip. It takes a suprisingly small amount of petrol to make the mixture high flammable.

Firstly if you've got contaminated petrol then get rid of the whole lot rather than trying to syphon the 'good stuff' off. You will probably end up with another batch of crap petrol cos although water will settle at the bottom it isn't quite that easy and straightforward to just syphon off the ok part of it. Its only a few quids worth after all.

Secondly just tip it away in the 'remote corner of the field'. It will soon evaporate on its own especially in this weather. Don't try burning it, it will end in tears. And don't tip it somewhere where it may get ignited, like where someone will pass by with a cigarette. Remember this time of year it would be very easy to accidentally start a huge grass/hay/straw fire so be careful.

On a serious note if you are going to burn it bit by bit as some suggested above, then DON'T POUR FRESH PETROL ONTO THE SAME GROUND YOU JUST BURNT THE LAST AMOUNT ON. It needn't be said what might happen to you if any burning embers are still present.

Leave it in an open wide mouthed container. It will evaporate in a few days. You would be doing very good public service if you followed the gatso suggestion though.

Take it to a field, make a trail of petrol on the ground, then dump the rest of the petrol ( in a crappy container ) and then set that bitch alight!
