Some advice here for those starting out so you dont make my mistake.

I was going between Bluewater and Dartford in Kent (via Greenhithe for those that know the area) and was following a blue SV, nothing stupidly fast but certainly faster than other traffic. This road is very wide but has a large chevroned area in the middle along alot of it. As I went to overtake on these lines I encountered my first full on tank slapper, which was fun whilst going past a car. Laughing This was caused by the 'lines' being raised/the tarmac had deterriorated.

So check if you go to overtake that the surface is fairly smooth and wont cause your bike to try and kill you. Smile

The other option of course is to fit a steering damper, very very hand for those chevroned sections Thumbs Up

Or to pull a wheelie as you overtake.

My bike was very prone to tankslappers and I had at least 3 at 100mph+ which wasn't too much fun. I had my suspension set up for my weight and haven't had one since Thumbs Up

Cost a fraction of the price of a damper and improved the handling of my bike as well.

i know that road and the shevies are a pain. the way i deal with them is to relax a bit and if you know they are like that you'll be all the better for it as theres no surprise waiting.

try it in the wet..... i did........ oh how we laughed Rolling Eyes

No steering damper required, I'm only riding a GPZ500s, and a restricted one at that.

Just need to avoid the extremely bumpy surfaces. These lines must have sat almost an inch above the level of the tarmac. I was relaxed when it happened and just kept a constant throttle and drifted the bike back into the lane after I'd passed the car.

Basically it's when the front end of a bike steers between full left lock and full right lock so rapidly it creates the effect of the bar ends 'slapping' the tank. As far as avoidance goes, I'm not sure, I've never had it happen to me Praying

Well to get out of a tank slapper I've heard it's best to accelerate out of it, am I right?

If you have a full-on lock to lock slapper it's hard enough just trying to keep hold of the thing. If you can keep the throttle open thats good, otherwise just hope it sorts itself out before you get chucked in the hedge.

What Maurice said. I managed to keep the throttle fairly constant and slowly got the bike over to the side.

I was pretty much in no control at all though.

yeah I know which one you mean now Wink Personally i've never experienced it, I don't have the power to ride up it (let alone overtake on it!) being on a 50cc.

Will watch out for when I get a better bike though - cheers Wink
