@ Shaggy that is taking the piss 500 per day, very unhealthy, you may aswell do that all meat diet but that makes you feel like crap also.

I am 6.1 6.2 and almost 14 stone but most people think i am 10-11stone, doesn't show on me and i eat as much crap as i want, love putting it in peoples faces that are on diets.

Keep on going between 13.7-13.12, i lose pounds from eating, good game.

Well, had my weekly weigh in yesterday, and there's another 5.9 pounds off. Still on track for my target.

In addition to the 500 calories a day, I'm getting cognitive behaviour therapy from the counsellor who I see once a week. I'm learning what my triggers are, i.e. visit to Ikea = need to have meatballs chips and gravy. Weekly shopping at Sainsbury's on a Sunday = all day breakfast. Up and about before 7:00am = McDonalds breakfast.

I'm also monitoring my blood pressure daily, and visiting my G.P regularly. It may seem drastic, and there's plenty of nay saysers who are too eager to jump on the "it's unhealthy/you'll put it all back on/might as well have your jaw wired/might as well do diet X/just do situps FFS" bandwagon. I've tried various diets, and never found one I could stick with. This one I can. It's not for everyone, it takes a shitload of willpower which fortunately I now have. I couldn't have done this a couple of years ago, but I'm in the right mindset now to see it through and stick with it.

Bottom line is that with any diet at all, if you go back to your old habits when you hit your target weight, you'll put the weight back on. Simple as that. Exercise is not the be all and end all of dieting - you burn 100 calories walking a mile. There's 3500 calories in a pound of fat. Fancy walking 35 miles to lose a pound? I thought not.

I'm not saying you shouldn't exercise at all, just that it's only a minor part of weight loss.

I was 5'7" and 18 stone. I will be 5'7" and 12 stone. I find it very easy to ignore 6'2", 14 stone faceless people on an internet forum who have no concept of what it's like to need to lose weight.

Walking a mile is barely considered exercise, unless you in your seventies Wink

I can run ten mile in 80 minutes and that burns off 1800 calories which is nearly four days worth of food on your diet. Thats two days exercise in two short 80 minute intervals to achieve a pound of fat loss...give or take.

In my mind exercise is the be all and end to weight loss because when you train hard, you have to eat well. Personally I have found that a good training regime tends to knock your eating habits into line anyway..... my body craves good food as oppossed to shit like chips and macdonalds because they are empty carbs and give no energy at all.

The only issue is that it takes self discipline, but to be honest if your on a 500 calorie a day diet then you are showing great self discipline.

In my mind there is not such thing as a good diet. Diets are unreasonable and fail becuase people cannot teach themselves how to eat for life, instead they choose to eat for pure pleasure and or emotional reasons.

Anyway, shaggy, I think its great that you are making the effort and succeeding but I think its incredibly naive to think exercise is only a small part of weight loss. From my experience, exercise is the key to keeping weight off and allowing yourself to enjoy food.

Stinkwheel's post shows this perfectly! Laughing

Hallelujah to that! Thumbs Up

It's so difficult not to when that's what you've always done though. Sad You start a diet full of good intentions and do really well (well I do anyway) and then gradually you get complacent, and all the old habits creep back in - before you know it you're back to square 1.

I personally believe a lifestyle change is required to loose weight and keep it off. And to achieve that you have to find ways to enjoy your new lifestyle.

Simple lifestyle habits are easy to form if you do it gradually. Learn to enjoy cooking so you know what you are eating is good. Learn to enjoy ten minutes strenious exercise....if not for the ten minutes but for the endorphine release at the end....if not that then enjoy it for its social aspects.

Which is great if you are in enough shape to do that ten mile run in 80 minutes. Personally I passed a major milestone just being able to put my socks on without breaking into a sweat Smile

Once I'm at my target weight, I will be starting exercise. I've already started with taking walks daily, but at the moment I'm being double dipped on my blood pressure - my weight loss has bought my average (with medication) from about 124/82 down to 114/72, but it drops as low as 100/60 on occasions and I'm close to passing out. One of the things my GP and I are trying to balance is the medication - another goal for me is to come off it completely. Until that time, I won't be doing any 10 mile runs Smile

It's all relative. As Babyyam said, our metabolisms are personal and are effected by a lot of different factors.

I didn't eat enough during my sixth form years due to a combination of things and as a result my metabolism went into "starvation" mode. Since meeting Suzuki the weight has gone on very quickly due enjoying my food (well, his cooking mostly).
I've gained about a stone and a half 8o

I have always run, and haven't stopped running, if anything I am exercising more now.

I agree - no diet is a good diet.

Don't get me wrong, it was difficult to get to that standard and at the last half marathon I did I was being overtook by guys in their 60's Shocked Which just proves that age isn;t the contributing factor.....its the mental aspect.

My point, moreover, was to show that exercise can and does burn vast amounts of calories, all you need to do is develop your fitness.

Please don't get me wrong, on a 500 calorie a day diet I wouldn't recommend any exercise at all as the strain could be fatal

I'm doing the opposite and trying to put on weight at the moment but I think something I do may help you as well.

I measure myself and weigh myself weekly, also getting my sister to take a picture once a month, slightly vain yes, but it works. Even though I have only put on a couple of pounds my physique is improving, as is my strength. I know that the weight is likely to follow soon.

Helps to make you feel good that you are making noticeable progress, even if you don't notice it by merely looking. Smile

Well you wouldn't have to lose weight if you watched what you were eating would you? i love people that go "i dont know why am so fat i hardly eat anything" when they are eating a box full of cakes while they are speeking to you.

Your Diet is really unhealthy and 500 a day would do more harm then good from what i can see, no matter what you say.

I have no doubt i could lose mybe to 11 stone or something if i cut out the chips and pizza's and anything else i can get my hands on.
No point though since my belly is flat and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

You dont need diets in this world, just cut out all the crap and you are bound to lose weight even without exercise, excercise just makes it come off even faster.

TBH I agree, its an incredibly unhealthy diet, however if you can keep the weight off once you do hit your target then I suppose you can argue its been worth the effort and health risk. Conversley staying hugely overweight is probably more of a health risk anyway.

I would also be concerned about changing your diet over at the end to a mroe conventional plan, as the minute you calorie intake increases your body will put weight back on.

There, I lied. I said I could ignore you. Smile

I know exactly why I'm fat. My calorie intake exceeded what my body burned. Wasn't just the intake, it was when and what I ate. Eating your main meal at 9pm then going to bed an hour later is fine if you are a Sumo trying to gain weight. Having a large pizza with everything on it, along with a side of chicken dippers, garlic bread with cheese and a couple of beers is also a great way of piling on the lard. Having a sedentary job where if I'm not sitting at a desk I'm sitting in a car adds to it.

I could say that having a haemorrhage and temporarily losing the use of my left side was why I put on 2 of the 6 stone, but that was now 4 years ago so it's no longer valid as an excuse.

Live my life, then tell me it's as simple as watching what I was eating. You've only proved my point that you have no concept of what it's like to need to lose weight.

If it's so bad, why am I sleeping better and feel as though I have more energy now? Being 18 stone is really unhealthy. This diet probably gives me more nutrition and vitamins than I had before, and (here's the crunch) it's a means to an end. 18 weeks of the so called "unhealthy" diet is a very small price to pay.

The human body was designed to store surplus as fat. It was also designed to live off it should it need to. Once the stomach is empty, it goes to the glycogen stores in the liver. Once that is depleted, it goes to the fat. I'm only doing what the human as an animal would do.

Nope, just the soups and shakes, and the bar. Once I've hit my target weight, I'll be starting the maintenance portion of the programme, where initially I just introduce protein into my diet, replacing one of the soups. Then It'll be raw veg, and gradually cooked veg. Things like fruit, carbs, grains, sugars, dairy, alcohol etc. won't be added until later, and only after a period of trial of each, so that if I have an intolerance to, say, wheat, I can note it's effects in isolation.

Can't use the internet to get decent info on this because it's all full of hard-sell snake oil merchants.

I used an active fat burner from tescos....it was basically a natural high dose of caffine, guarana and a few other stimulants. to be honest i didn't benefit at all but some guys swear by them.

One I want to try is https://www.high5-online.com/acatalog/Joint_Protection___Energy_Booster___Fat_Burner.html

excellent products from high 5

Seeing as there a few people trying to lose a few pounds, I suggest we have a diet thread where you can post your current weight, your target weight, and the program you are doing. Then as we (including me) hopefully lose weight, we can post it and be motivated by peoples positive responses (lol)

I've known Shaggy since the 80's (not in the biblical sense though Shocked ), and once he sets his mind on something he's about as stubborn and persistent as its possible to be, drives ya nuts sometimes, so he will do the 18 weeks and reach his target, he managed to drink his soup and eat his bar while i scoffed a couple of bananas infront of him, I did ask him about his diet and thought if I had felt as unhealthy as he had then hopefully the willpower would come from somewhere.

Under normal circumstances I think 500 calories a day would be unhealthy, but if you read his posts he consulted his doctor before going with it, and is being medically monitored while he does it, so Shaggy good luck with it Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

About 3 years ago I went on a 500 ish calorie a day diet. plus going to the gym 3 times a week. I lost 2 stone 2lb in just under 7 weeks. 3 Years later and the weight is still off. They say it's not recommended, but I think different things work for different people. Thumbs Up
