What the hell is going on with scooters/moped's these days ?
When i were a boy Very Happy 50cc bikes would struggle upto about 35 and then collapse at the first hint of a hill.
I keep getting scooters and 'peds racing along side me at 50mph !!
Always ridden suicidally by stupid kids wearing tracksuit bottoms a t-shirt and with their helmet strap flapping about in the wind !
When did scooters get so "fast" ?

they only produce 7 or 8 hp, but it's enough for 55mph ish.

Ive been riding my 50cc geared bike around last couple of days as the rs has been off the road.

Its very very strange, I actually speed more on the moped than I do on my rs 125... and my rs 125 is about 1236457568586578357373568785959356765 times more powerful...

I think its because u just dont get the sense of speed on a moped, u look at the speedo and ur like, is that it. and it dosnt feel fast because you arnt hanging on for dear life as u accelorate from the speedlimit speed.

Infact id say that mopeds should just be banned and 16 year olds should start on 125cc's Smile

A normal 50cc scooter will be around 5/6bhp, and get about 50 indicated on the flat, and around 40 up most normal hills.

@greatmoorred - You sure you aren't going up against 125cc scooters? Some of them look identical to their 50cc counterparts and sound pretty similar too!

Normal 50cc scooter makes about 3.5bhp, 5bhp with a race pipe and up to 13bhp with a big bore kit in road spec tune, I had a Zip SP 70cc at over 21bhp and 90mph on the dyno but it was a very expensive high spec race scooter we did at work (scooter shop) as a project

I dont agree, even though some people may be capable of riding a 125 at 16, for each one of them there al least 3 people who probably shouldn’t even be allowed to ride a 50. Iv see countless people on scooters who just shouldn’t been on the road and are a danger to them selves and other people on the road. I think what would be a sensible idea would be that at 16 you can take the A1 test then be allowed to ride a 125, as i don’t really believe the CBT teaches riders enough. I think this is being bought in for most euro country who have signed up to the new 2012 bike laws, we are one of the few / only who have decided people still cant take a 125 test until they are 17.

I thought scooters used to be fairly quick, became slow and then got quick again. I used to ride a 1973 Honda C50 which did 55mph on the flat (still got it actually) but then all these Visions and Melodys came out that struggled to do 30!

ahhh the scooter days, which for me were not that long ago! i was 16 and i passed my CBT and got a 50cc peugeot speedfight2. i bought it from a shop and was £895. he told me it was restricted still. so i ride home full throttle, to look at the speedo telling me 48mph! was well chuffed.i must admit for that whole summer i was racing cars, and me and about 6-7 of my mates who had peds just caused chaos around the town really. i remember when it was 30 degrees celsius in the summer, i would ride round in shorts and tshirt, maybe even taking the tshirt off. A right prick i was! didnt have a care in the world. i would liked to have been told it was more of a responsibility really, e.g. if i basically did two things wrong such as not have L-plates or carry a pillion then i could be banned, but i was oblivious to this really. then got a cagiva mito and as i began to understand a bit more about speed, and the roads, i calmed down. and after riding that i got a gsxr600, and i am a much more mature rider (i hope)! i also now know when to wear protective clothing e.g. doing a ton down the motorway will be full leathers, as well as know that if im going round town at 30mph, i can wear jeans and a tshirt, although i still know the risks.
