Started my office job today.
What an eye opener !! Shocked

Basically I have found out a few things (after watching office dynamics) from a 6 hour shift:

* A half hour job can be 'extended' into a 3 hour job if carefully managed. Type slower, place hand on chin and think a bit,... go back over what you did a few times.

* Making other people a tea/coffee is worthwile as you get paid to do this. Why work at your desk when you can gossip in the kitchen for 20 minutes ??

* You can find jobs from nowhere ! Copy lists...make a list of a list. There's an hours pay !! Shift stuff around on your desk. Go to the water cooler for 15 minutes. Go to the loo for half an hour...

* Staring out of the window wastes time. Hear a car beep ?... go to the window and see who is beeping in the car park. See a woman in shorts outside ??... run to the window and sl*g her off ! All fun Shocked

The whole 'office workers world' where I am is a bit weird

I am used to running round like a demon
I find dragging jobs out quite difficult
I guess I will get used to it Very Happy

You can do that in the Manual Labour field to, loading gear from field onto waggon should take roughly half hour/1 hour for 2 people, we made it take 4 hours, do a few bits, have a sit down and a fag on top of the waggon Laughing

I can't begin to understand how you guys can take so long to put up some blockwork. Evil or Very Mad IWasn't fond of the brickies I worked with, one of the many reasons I got out of the construction trade!

It's so true... that's one of the joys of BCF. Unfortunately at the moment I have my back to everyone so they can *all see my screen. I'm frowning and scratching my head to make it look like work.

so do it, but with a dual monitor setup, I can have a "series of scripts" running that I "need to monitor" in the other screen, i'm just checking out BCF while I wait for them to finish Wink

God Bless the internet. Just remember, when someone brings something to you to ask for help from your department, DON'T JUMP TO IT! If you do they will obviously know your doing nothing of any importance. I always always always say "yes, just give me a minute here to finish this up" even though I'm totally doing absolutely nothing of any importance.
Also don't check your voicemail evertytime a message shows up. This always creates more calls. As soon as you clear out your messages, more will come, whereas if you leave them there for a while, then nobody else will call. Kind of Murphey's law.
But here's the truth behind what you said in your original post. If you make a 1 hour job go only one hour then they will expect it to be done in 1 hour alllllll the time. Even when you've got too many things on your list of "things to do". The way I look at it, if you stretch that job out over 2-3 hours then you will always be consistent no matter what your schedule looks like, and thus you will be considered reliable by co-workers.

Funny how office jobs have there own set of political rules.

I worked for the local council a long time ago, now that was another world. Council office work is far removed from the private sector. Friday was pub day, go to the pub for lunch, spend most of the day, come back and sleep at your desk, go home. No point anyone calling Tech Support on a Friday.

Then I moved to the private sector for more money. Now I don't go to the pub very often, but I have watched the entire 1st season of Battlestar Galactica and am nearly finished the 2nd. Thumbs Up

Hi
Ive found (after newly starting an office job) that everyone works at half speed. Nobody seems to mind and the job gets done eventually and the customers still pay us lots, so why not Thumbs Up.

Ha

What an eye-opener those posts were !! Shocked Very Happy

I had a pretty awful day today
Some idiot tried to make me do audio transcripts even though I told her I couldn't !
God damn awful council office

In the end I went to HR to ask to be moved to a department with some work (not being funny, but they have had LOADS of temps in, and all have struggled to find work for them in there)
I think they like to look busy and ask for helpers
Do they get benefits for acting busy or what!?

It IS a totally different, and at times, surreal world !
The women chat about biscuits, and the men chat about 'performance goal posts' or some sh*e

I can't really figure out what about 80% of the office does
One woman types audio interviews for the benefits agency, 3 men click their mice profusely and scratch their heads, another man huffs and puffs and says 'oh god' every 15 minutes, and the rest of them eat bacon rolls and phone people about general weather and stuff.

It's no wonder councils lose money hand over fist !! Very Happy

Oh well, tomorrow is another day
And I am doing mail merging apparently
Cool
Gonna fu*k that up aren't I !!?? Surprised

one thing I've seen people do is get on the p.a. system and page themself to areas of the building.
My uncle used to work in a factory as a technician for fixing the conveyors and all manufacturing equpiment. When work was slow he would get a forklift and pick up a palette and drive around as if he was going to get something, then he'd drop off his lunch at the shipping doors and drive back to there office. Get on the P.A. system and page himself to tell him that their was a package at the back door for him. Then he'd walk through the factory to go get it.

Never had an office job, but was in building maintenance for 6 months. Now, that's no work. Tea, tea, more tea, 2 hour lunch, tea, tea, wind down before going home.

If you want to have that as a “job”, go for it. I actually like to work for my money.

Confused Question

ditto, if i have to be somewhere that wouldnt necessarily be my first choice of somewhere to be (i.e. at work) then i definately want to be working solid, otherwise i dont think there is any real point in being there, and this point i find more frustrating than any other, if there isnt anything to be done i will create something, or hassle a higher ranking bod to create something

i do envy some office workers, in that it would be nice to go into work knowing you have the possibility of an easy day when you are tired or feeling rough or whatever, but personally i dont think you can beat the feeling at the end of a hard days work, having felt youve done your little bit for the day

hmm I used to work for local council, the money sucks but you get an easy life!

Office work in the private sector is different ball game, you work for your money but generally they pay you well!!

I am in the nice position of now getting paid to make decisions rather than have to do the donkey work which I've done for years, its less physical work but more demanding on my brain Shocked

Not all office jobs are a breeze tho.....I do get fed up of people that assume that you are in a office therefore you sit on your backside all day!

My job is office based but I can be running around the building like a headless chicken trying to round people up! or going out on site to one of our other laundries and doing meetings with people who are going to lose their jobs, its not physical but it can be draining emotionally, especially when you are dealing with real people.......

Dunno, given the choice I'd rather be working outside in all weathers than stuck in an office, but as I get to go out and about its not so bad.

Council tho, nuff said, easy street!! - its a typical place where you are a number and a cog in a wheel generally...and therefore can get away with quite a lot!!

and people wonder why the Chinese/Indians/South Americans working for a pittance are pissing all over British industry, and almost every business plan involves outsourcing

council work may well be easy but in terms of experience it isn't very good ,private sector bods will probably think less of it say for every 1 year in private sector = 3 years council , and for every 5 years council = 1 year private sector.

Agreed; Horses for courses maybe. I work my arse off most days; last couple of weeks have generally been 12-13 hour days for me in and out of the office but the pay makes it worthwhile so I'd never trade that for a life of clock watching lethargy at less than a quarter of the wage.

Railway work. Sit around and wait for a fault. If you get a fault, go and fix, this may mean an hours journey(sleep) to the fault. You then have to find a good gap between trains and plan the work.

2 weeks well 8 days of these shifts in a 6 week roster is used to do maintenance. So we then have to plan the work and find when it is safe to get out on track.

The work is such things as filling batteries and taking voltages. We also use a lookout in Red Zones(trains are running) and they do nothing but blow a horn if a train comes!

Im at work now! 8 hour shift, no work planned no faults yet. Mr. Green
