Riding home form work last night I had just come off a dual carriage way doing 70 then come off a roundabout when i excelerated off this I felt and heard a heavy crunch come fom the lower half of the bike, Thinking I had maybe rolld over a stone from the road works nearby as the rear wheel skipped abit I excelerated a bit more changed up gears and it did it again, I pulled up sharpish due to the fact I am ever cautious now after an accident last year. I found my chain was now sporting a new design of a split llink, Its not supposed to have a split link on it might I add. and the whole thing was bent.

Having heard from a friend what might possibly have happened if it had come off entirely if i had kept going I am counting myself lucky I had the sense to pull over. Only thing keeping the chain on was the link on the inside was still attached, just.

Chain is only 16 months old and has done about 2000 miles, not a cheap one either and oiled religiously once a week,

Hi Stitch,

Are we assuming the chain was fitted correctly ?

Was it endless or did it have a soft link?

Is the link that has failed the soft link ?

Obviously it would be nice to put it down to a faulty chain (and probably try to get a free replacement) I think you need to answer those questions first.

If it's the soft link that has failed it's probably down to poor fitting.

Even if the chain is endless or it's not the soft link, it's possible that something got thrown up from the road (maybe a stone chip) and caught between the chain and rear sprocket.

It might be worth a close inspection of the rear sprocket, look for a damaged tooth or two.

Other than that, are you sure it wasn't too loose or too tight and that wheel alignment was ok ?

Yeah chain was fitted properly by the garage where I bought it, it was an O ring chain and no it wasnt the connecting ring that failed, if thats what you mean by soft ring. The chain was ajusted recently by a bike mechanic friend of mine when he helped do the rear drum brakes, everything was fine with the wheel alignment, both sprockets are undamaged so not to sure it was a stone, to be honest im not bothered about the idea of getting the replacement chain paid for by the garage or anything I am just glad i didnt loose the bike, which im sure i would have if the chain had come off altogether, I know I would have panicked and lost it.

Den forgive the photography lol it was 5 in the morning and i had been up for over an hour at that time lol.

Shocked yikes, good decision to pull over Thumbs Up

The soft link hot dog refers to is the one which the garage rivvets together. Though since it's an o-ring, it'll probably be endless so you probably will have had your swingarm dropped out when it was fitted.

If you get that to a metallurgist, you may be able to find the cause, if not for claiming any money, then to alert the manufacturer to a potentially dangerous fault.
If you send it direct to the manufacturer and tell them your story, chances are they will have it investigated.

Jack - O-ring chains are NOT necessarily endless.

It's worth bearing in mind that ALL bikes that have braced swinging arms CANNOT have endless chains.

It's impossible to fit an endless chain to any bike with a braced swinging arm.

Therefore most (nearly all) quality O ring chains are fitted with a soft link.

I don't like to assume that his bike has a braced swinging arm, but even if it doesn't, bike shops would rather fit a soft link than remove a swinging arm.

I thought a garage would have been more eager to drop the swingarm so they can charge more. Seconded about the braced swingarm, though! Thumbs Up
