Thinkin of buying a project

I've got £500 to mess around with (not including insurance).

I cannot for the life of me seem to be able to find even a semi decent 4 stroke 125 just for abit of experience and popping to work few times a week.

So what i was thinking was.. Would i be better off keeping up my search OR would i be better buying somethin abit neglected/worse for wear and just spending the money on tarting it up

Now i'm a bike mechanic novice BUT i was a car mechanic and would like to think on that front im far from clueless

Go for an early CG125/SR125/GN125.

Like with cars, the general rule is "buy the best you can afford"

If you buy a cheap-to-keep bike (like Toby suggests) it can be worth buying a tired bike as long as you can keep on top of the maintainance yourself - if you can spanner a car, you can manage a cg125.

If you buy a more exotic but neglected bike it'll probably drive you mad and skint you within a short period of time. Main problem is price of parts.

Golden rule is "Tarting up = throwing money away".

Is it a GZ? The parts are expensive for those bikes so I've heard.

If you've already got your test booked I wouldn't buy a project 125 and throw more money at it. You're not going to get your money back, save it and put it towards your first bike after the test.

depends on what parts you use , if there isn't a good breakers nearby forget it , I've got 4 goodish breakers nearby , and the things I could do if I lived near M1 breakers in Whittingham (jnct 9) ,

using new parts is crazy except for vital parts as there was a quote recently building a bike from new parts will cost x4 more than a new bike, even with used parts , totting up an NTV650 parts on ebay building it out of used parts would cost £2K
