When I'm giving it the beans I like to keep my revs high. This leads to occasionally hitting the rev limiter. I'm trying not to make a habit of it, but will it do any damage to the bike, accidentally doing it every now and then?

The limiter is there to limit the revs Wink
It does it so that you don't do any damage. You'll be fine.

rs go pop alot tho, but isnt the limit there so you dont do damage ? my stupid ped revs up to 15,000 then hits a limit which i think is way to high.

What if you're in the highest gear trying for top speed? Is it fine to go past the red line then?

I love playing in the red line just for the noise Wink

I will say dont let it bounce of the red line alot, as in let it hit the limiter and just make that annoying Vroooom Vroooom as it bounces off Wink

I dont think it will damage it mind Wink

You can drop valves when keep hitting the limiter.. my KTM blew up after I hit the limiter a few too many times doing wheelies and cost nearly a grand to fix!

Tbh mate, i think that was just one of those things. There is no distinct relationship between hitting the limiter and dropping valves unless the engine is a poor design to begin with.

When the engine gets up to high revs it puts more stress on the valves, con rods etc, and trust me, over revving an engine destroys valves lol. If some tool plays with the govenor to raise the rev limit, the engine will self destruct. It's not healthy, and the nasty vibes at those rpms won't be liked by your engine, but i've hit the limiter a few times and i'm not worried. It's just not a good thing to make a habbit of.

Jack

I would like to trust you Jack but i have to trust plenty of engine building experience and years at uni studying it more. Razz

A standard engine is very unlikely to drop a valve from hitting the factory limiter. If they didn't expect people to rev it that high they wouldn't have bothered with the limiter.

The limiter is there if you exceed the red line of an engine.

The engine is not designed to go up to the limiter on a regular basis. No matter how well built an engine is, at that speed the valve springs can't return the valves quick enough and they will kiss the pistons.

The limiter on my bike is buried 1000rpm into the red line, yes i have hit it but change gear or ease off as soon as it happens. Some people use it as a substitute as a shift light and wonder why the bike is getting rattly. Rolling Eyes
