How big is the first tort, I thought it was large, but the next one (was it icey) posted next to a coke can was tiny!

BTW i didn't realise that torts were issued a form of number plates (tags). Funnily it is even blacked out on taters tort , as if someonve will go on to the TTLA (Tortoise and turtle licencing agency) and get info or something

How much are they to buy? and where do you buy them from?
Are they easy to keep, like do they just stay out in the garden permanently??

What do you do with them when they hirbernate?

I got chased by a tort once

We were visiting a patient in the community, I was just minding my own buisness trying to look interested in the jabberings of a mad old hag, when out of nowhere this 'thing' came roaring round the corner and was making a bee line for me.

I tried to look brave and resisted the urge to run away, but it was now at full pelt, the inches just flew by as the ravanous house tort was set on only one thing, to hump and bash my feet

It was only a little fella, but it carried some mass The little old lady kept picking it up and moving it away, but it just kept on coming back for more

I've got 3 females.

A Hermanns (~70 years old) been in the family for 60 years.

A Spur thigh (~50 yo) found on a golf course by my Dad 20 years ago and the rightful owners never came forward. There were lots of chancers that replied to our 'found' ad in the paper though!

A Horsfield (~50-60 yo) which was seconds away from being put down at the vets I used to work at. I dramatically burst into the consult room and offered to take on the tortie & nurse it back to health. It had woken from hibernation too early, fallen out of it's box & snapped a piece off it's carapace. The resulting infection required Baytril jabs every other day, appropriate heating, lighting and care & the owner was immuno compromised & was unable to be near infective agents. So, just as he was signing the consent form, I managed to acquire another tortie.

They all trundle round the garden, helping themselves to whatever they fancy along with apple, round lettuce (never iceburg) cucumber, tomato, strawberry, broccoli, any bread that the birds haven't eaten and I've even cought them munching on the remains of dead mice that the cat has brought into the garden!

I keep meaning to get them microchipped, in case they get nicked or wander off.


I love torties.

PS does anyone want to give their gentleman tortoise a holiday on the South Coast?
Free food and board and as much shagging as his little heart can take - my girls are soooo frustrated!

Only joking, where my Grandad used to work there was a tortoise, he was called hector and was very cool. I remember being there when he came out after hibernation, I still don't know what ever happened to him!

Some very good pics and information on that site

From reading some of the posts, I did not realise that they were such time consuming pets, I remember watching Blue Peter and George (I think that was its name) was stuffed into a box for 6 months, dug up, had its eyes cleaned with cotton wool and then chucked into the garden until winter, before being out away for hibernation.

Do tortoises still hibernate?

Do many of you keep them indoors? Is it my local exotic pet store that smells or the actual tortoises poo and wee?

It's an on going discussion about Hibernating Tortoises, some people do and so people don't. Personally I don't because I'm worried about loosing mine during hibernation - which would be devastating.

I have an indoor 'table' for mine, and also an outdoor pen, so when the weathers good he goes out, and when the weathers bad he stays in

I don't find tortoise poo/wee smells

Pet shop smells then Although I think they had wood chip substrate that mey have needed changing

I could'nt think of a better term (for time consuming), big commitment to take on board that this pet, and member of the family will last longer than you and may be your children The wife said its something that needs to be put into a will, who will look after Ol' Speedy after you die

I also did nt realise that you cant just feed them on veg, they need weeds from the garden, one post suggested going to the local park for them

I haven't really decided on that yet, I guess I will pass him onto a family member, or friend.

Yes, you can often find me picking weeds outside the front of the house, and sometimes stopping at the side of the road to get them
