Downgearing question.

thx1138 sent me a pm after I expressed the intrest in downgearing my Hornet. He asked a question about insurance and downgearing.

Pretty much asked whether insurance would need telling, I couldnt indefinately say if they would and left the question open.

But this has got me thinking and I cant let the thought drop. Would this need insurance notification, would it be classed as a modification or even an engine mod?

Because I realise it is just the running gear, but it changes a bikes characteristics dramatically.

Any help appreciated.

There was a thing in RiDE a while ago, asking insurance companies which mods they should declare. I believe technically they said you should tell them about downgearing. The chances they count the number of teeth on your sprockets is low, but then Renthals have the number stamped on them which I suppose an eagle-eyed investigator could spot and check.

But you should also 'technically' tell them if you fit a hugger, a tinted screen, a non standard sticker etc.

I wouldn't bother tbh, and it isn't going to change the characteristics that dramatically unless you fit a dinner plate to the back.

The sad thing is, I could actually see insurance companys getting out of giving you money for having 1 tooth more on your sprocket...

I cant see why you would need to tell them but if you want zero hassel then its always worth a ring.

I doubt if they would check something like that unless it was a really serious accident, my ace was checked over by an assessor a few years back, no way was he even qualified to make an opinion on plastics never mind looking at mechanical things. He tried to tell me that some of the marks and scratches were older than the accident, took loads of hassle a letters to get the insurance to pay out
